Speaking of Spam

So, I got spammed today and for some reason I clicked the opt out link.

Look at what I got

Don't worry...just don't put your email address in :)
So, my question is...what the hell takes 10 days to opt out? I really know the answer but this is what gives legitimate opt in lists a bad name.

Our mailer for instance...you click the opt out link and done, you are out of the list. The worst our mailer will do if I selected it to do so would be to be a double opt out mailer. I would never select that feature though.

They must've bought the cheaper version of the mailer where you have to go in & remove people by hand :D

Jim 2006-04-26 10:21 AM

Yeah, that must be it :)

That gives them another 10 days to spam the spunk out of you and to sell your name to others.

I always think of the remove link as "confirmation to sell your valid email address to every other spammer in the universe".

I know Alex and that is so bad. Not you...but having to think that about an unsubscribe link. I have been hitting more and more unsubscribe links and really, many more times than not, I get unsubscribed.

That's what I mean about it giving all opt in email a bad name.

Besides spam arrest, what do you gentlemen propose as a solution to this dillema?

Hire a team of highly trained monkeys to check your email for you 24/7 at an operating cost $7.50 an hour. |bananna|

There is very little option these days. Either you go down the route of spam arrest / blocker tools, or you suffer through tons and tons of unwanted and often virus / malware / spyware laden spam.

What email needs to work again is a proper protocol that really does secure the identity of the sender. Spam only works when the spammer can hide behind proxies and fake mail addresses, and by routing the traffic through jumps, misdirections, and landing pages on hacker servers. Without these tools, they are pretty much screwed. Spam works only in the shadows. In the bright light, these roaches would scurry away as fast as can be.

A little article and numbers about SPAM.

Hmmm, 5% CTR on porn has to be really tempting to some folks!

Yeah taking 10 days to opt out is ridiculous. I guess they can't take the bruised ego of losing a lead :-)

On the spam note, I have been using a method to see just where I get it from, My e-mail is pretty open to accept e-mail to anyname@oneof my domains, com so what I do is when I sign up with a sponsor or have to give an e-mail address, I use that companies name@oneofmydomains,com just to see if they sell or give out my e-mail address.
Today I am finding a couple big name sponsors in my e-mail box. I hope this is a mistake. I would hate to think they gave out my e-mail address or sold it out. Or someone may be just got lucky with using the sponsors name@mydomain,com for an e-mail address.
Kind of crazy.......

I would need an automatic "opt out" script to opt out of every spam i get. The shit is really getting out of hand.

Maybe 1% of my mail is not spam.
