Making a new Hub

Hey, Im just starting to build a new hub. Its been a while since i did one and was wondering if some of the veterans had some words of advice for a still self proclaimed newbie.

Thanks

Ummm,

Thanks DD :)
Darn i guess jurbi's is still not accepting new submissions, how unfortunate. :\ I always got good trafic from there back in the day. :)

Ya, advice please.

venturi 2003-12-15 05:20 PM

Hey ross, how goes it bro? :)

Have you seen Voltar's "Triples Program"? I don't recall the URL but it's over on VNWR. It's a very interesting read and should definitely spark some ideas in your head. |shake|

ross 2003-12-15 05:44 PM

Hey Venturi,

I was wondering if i'd run into you at GG&J's. How you doin bud.
I ttook some time off, 6 or 7 months i think. I was quite ill and not able to work. But everythings relatively back to normal.

Its good to see familiar ppl around the board. Make me feel a bit more at home. I spend a lot of time in GG&J's IRC channel. Ive been kinda helpin out some newbies in the channel and spookyx gave me +v (i feel so important) LOL Must have been cuz of my smashing good looks and pretty face. :)

Good to see ya Venturi. Stop by the channel and say hi sometime.

I posted on Voltars board and asked for some more info. Thanks for the referal.

Take Care Bud,

Ross

Ross,

Do me a favour.. define a "hub" for me...

It is not something I do or believe in and I would love to know what the present thinking is..

If its just a page listing all your sites? then IMO that is a waste of time?!

DD

Cleo 2003-12-15 05:59 PM

Hmmm, I've always made pages up that lists my free sites along with a bunch of sponsor ads and stuff. I've always had nice sales off of my hubs, far from a waste of time.

My current one is at the root of the domain that I build my promotional stuff off of.

DangerDave 2003-12-15 06:06 PM

:D k "waste of time" might have been a bit harsh.

Hey DD,

Naw, waste of time hits the nail right on the head. Thats the crux of the problem. I dont know what a "hub" really is.

I always hear webmasters, (in IRC) say "Build a hub, and fill it with your sites". But i have done some research and the "hub" issue is still unresolved.

Cleo, I see your point. But is a "hub" just a 1 page wonder with links to some freesites mixed in with some sponsor links?

The last time i tried to build a "hub" i filled it with all my freesites and some sponsor links, then that kind of turned into a linklist, of sorts. Then I thought, what the hell, i have a linklist here, I might as well start taking submissions. Up to this point i was just using a java form for submissions and manually admin. the list. Now the site has become a script driven list with a pr4 and according to my server stats, has some decent se traffic.

I'm just curious as to what the veteran linklist owners/webmasters would define a "hub" as being.

I may be just confusing the whole issue, but i think my questions have some validity. Im just a curious kinda guy.

Thanks for putting up the this long-winded reply. But these are questions ive always had but was never able to fully articulate what i was thinking.

I look forward to the replies. :)

This is my idea of a hub
http://kinkycleo.com
It is very clean, probably too clean, but I'm lazy and busy running a link list. ;)

MrMaryLou 2003-12-15 06:57 PM

Ahh hub lets see the the book says LOL
The center part of a wheel, fan, or propeller.
A center of activity or interest; a focal point.

Well it can be almost anything you want really TGP LL a banner farm ect ect :)

grzepa 2003-12-15 07:00 PM

Hmm exactly...... Im always hearing "build a hub , build a hub" but cant really figure out what this hub thing really is.... because if its a page that lists all your previously done sites It looks like a small linklist.

Cleo 2003-12-15 07:04 PM

A hub is that thing that you have to go through when getting a connecting flight where you hope they don't find the party goods that you hid in one of your body openings.

Sumrpal 2003-12-15 08:09 PM

Ross, this is what I call a Hub http://www.sexxxtour.com/sexy/amateurs.html

but everyone has a different idea, a different take on the concept.

It is basically just a one-page wonder with various and sundry ads, promotions and links on it .. links to anything, it doesn't matter. The Triple gives just one way of utilizing them.

ross 2003-12-15 08:35 PM

Awesome!!

Ya, 1 page wonders. That kind of what i had in mind. But maybe something more niche specific, im thinkin. Thanks for helping me get that gerbil running on the wheel again.

Thanks for all the great replies and examples.

take care all.

Cleo, thats really funny. LOL

I just kinda sped by it the first time, but on the second read i laffed bloody hard.

Here's my amateur opinion on "hubs" - standby, this could be scary...

They can be great for keeping a surfer inside your own web of sites to funnel them around till you either make a sale or write them off as a waste of BW.
They can be a pain in the arse if you end up with lots of freeloaders just churning your bandwidth.
They should be niche specific.
If you link to all your other niche specific sites back to the hub from different domains you own that are listed on the hub you can beef up your pagerank/clickrank on the SEs and get better listings.

venturi 2003-12-16 04:47 PM

And hey Ross, great to see you back around! |shake|

Linkster 2003-12-16 06:43 PM

venturi - thats a good point and I like to call hubs more like traps - if youre gonna just list your free sites then make it a little LL - but Ive always tried to make them into a traffic filtering tool - with a little harder selling the further the surfer goes into it.

finnbear 2003-12-17 08:16 AM

This is mine:

http://www.porn-for-masses.com/

It started as 1 page wonder listing sponsor sites mainly, but it has growed in these years I have had it. It's kinda my most loved baby, and I usually work with it at least one day every week. It has mainly sponsor site links, but some of my own too.

ross 2003-12-17 10:48 AM

Finnbear, cool little site. "Porn For Them Asses".......oops "Porn for Masses" sorry:) i couldnt resist

Venturi, ya its great to be back around. The only crappy thing is all those who dont know me from the old days just think i some rank newbie. Ya sill have stuff to learn, but who here doesnt. Well...GG poss.|greenguy|

It's terrible to have to start for scratch again so in many respects i am a newbie, but past into "whore-dom" a while back. I miss buzz. :(

Thanks again for all the great examples.

Take Care All

DangerDave 2003-12-17 04:58 PM

K well I have a better picture of what people class as "hubs".

DO you you guys link in to these hubs?
from the sites listed?
from elsewhere?

not trying to be a smart ass.. just thinking of a project ..:)

DD

Linkster 2003-12-17 06:13 PM

DDave - on free sites Ive always pretty much given up 1 off the 3 sponsor spots in the rules to have a link like "looking for something different" or "more porn selections" something to that effect
I also link into those hubs with a link from pure SE pages in case the person that searched did so on a broad term - basically they would come in on a spoke of the wheel and where they click in that page will determine whether they need to go to the central page or another niche - at the end of a spoke(or set of fpas and other type pages) if I havent sold them something I try to send them off for a fresh surfer in trade.

I try to put a link on everything that I build to my current hub. I do always put a FPA between that link and my hub so that they need to see it before they get to see more free nekkid pics.
