Now that .xxx is pretty much over...

What do you think the next big threat is?

Cleo 2006-05-11 10:50 PM

Death by public stoning of all pornographers

Bill 2006-05-11 11:48 PM

I think they are likely to proceed along a couple of different tracks.

More obscenity trials testing the local standards issue for online delivery a bit more.

Passing some new laws trying to expand the 2257 requirements.

More attempts to pass mailer laws, and spyware/scumware laws. (Which would benefit most of us here.)

Maybe some attempts to use a business solution, related maybe to the "net neutrality" issue, allowing the big wire/fiber co.s and isp's to charge a fee to deliver porn and other "risky" materials.

And the stoning is always an idea burning in the oppositions minds. I think they'd approve of a bit of public stoning.

After Bush was elected everyone said that the sky would be falling on American adult webmasters/companies. Well six years later other than rhetoric the big crackdown never happened. I believe we can thank the rights guaranteed in the US constitution and some fine attorneys for this.

You do know that your complete phone records (along with 1/3 of all the other US citizens) are now part of a goverment data base?

So wrong, the only things we have to thank for Bush not legislating us out of existance:

9/11
Iraq
Katrina
Gas Prices
The Economy

Belive me, if everything we rolling along smooth he's have taken a bigger shot at us. To spend time targeting porn while all of these other problems are going on would make him look like the nutjob he is.

Even he knows that.

Jim 2006-05-12 06:55 AM

Jay, you should have put in, "Business as usual". That's how I have been working through all the scares. As long as the US doesn't cut us off from the rest of the world, I see as many problems in the future as in the past.

Hopefully no "sky is falling" people will come around and try to line their pockets because of fear.

I'm not so sure he knows that, but the people behind the scenes pulling the puppet strings know that.

I would still be cautious about the CC cards pulling out. There was an item a little while back about a bank being allowed to discriminate against an porn company. It wouldn't be much of a stretch to allow Visa to also stop processing for adult.

cc companies are all about 'the bottome line' and cc transactions for porn makes them a very pretty penny which imo, would not be dropped anytime soon.|crazy|

I agree |thumb

Yup I agree with what Jim said above. It seems every week there's a new threat to us and some mofo trying to flog us some solution software. I keep working and building and would someone let me know when the plug is pulled, cheers. :)

As long as there is a way to make money from fear, new scares will keep popping up. The xxx thing was a bad idea. It could have been a good idea if greed wasn't involved.

But over the years there has been one scare after another. And yet, there is always someone that will profit from any particular scare.

When something comes up where no profit is involved, then I will be a little afraid.

DJilla 2006-05-12 12:15 PM

I think the greatest danger might be that porn becomes so common no one wants any. That would never happen.... right? Right?

Only true for webmasters :D

Jim 2006-05-12 12:49 PM

Somebody always wants something. The thing to worry about is when everyone in the world has access to the Internet. After all, once you have been online for a while, you learn that you really don't have to pay to look at anything. I think we are quite away from that point though. I am going to have to take a look at the US statistics of what percentage is online.

Then again, I guess my point is moot since people will continue to have babies and these babies will grow up and be new to the web :) So, i guess, when people stop having sex and babies will be the time when people will not want porn :)

RawAlex 2006-05-12 12:49 PM

I was thinking of selling a complete 2257 & anti-.xxx software package with optional plugins to handle locusts and to send hate mail to Bush every other day through anonymous mail gateways.

$799. You must be running OS/2 on a PCjr with a chicklet keyboard.

Funny story. I know intellectually that all the user forums, etc. have everything to download and trade free because I see everbody complaining about it and have come across a few sites. But I've never wanted to bother checking it out myself because I get the point.

A few months ago, I thought about hiring a friend of a friend of mine. Good guy, working stiff, could use a break, porn addict, him and his girl swingers, know the scene. Was going to have him pursue link exchanges and post my urls in the user forums cause he's out there anyway. So I make the propositon. Would have paid him nice change for not doing anything and the big selling point was that I was going to bring him on the INSIDE of the porn industry, maybe give him his own site to work once he learned a little. We've had a few conversations but he still doesn't get it (maybe its me who doesn't get it).

He's going "oh yeah, maybe, sounds cool, but listen, check out myfreepaysite.---, and look at this site, and wow this one is real cool I'm downloading two movies right now on and on. Here is guy that can use extra cash, and can get it for doing what he's doing every night anyway and he isn't the slightest bit interested because he is awash in so much free porn. I really got the point then.

I think they're going to push 2257, keep funneling money away from child protection and use it for obscenity and soon they're going to pressure Visa. They passed some great laws to increase profits to already profitable CC companies so now it's time for the CC companies to pay their debt.

I think a new scare every 2 week is business as usual.
