Attention HFSLinks.com Users

We are making some changes to the hfslinks, com script to add RSS feeds. If you need anything special for it to work with your ll script, please let me know in a hurry.

That are a couple more little bells and whistles we are adding. If you have any suggestions to fit your needs, now is the time to make them.

Reverse the links on the filler sites :) |couch|

Simon 2006-05-26 07:49 AM

I think he's following Tommy's "one for you and two for me" rule on that one.

Fillers are actually a motivatinal tool to be used by affiliates to pressure their sponsors into making HFS thus eliminating the need for fillers. Kind of like a cyber equivilant of a cattle prod. |club|

Simon 2006-05-26 09:24 AM

But of course they are. :)

I was jesting about Linkster's jesting request to reverse the links ... based on a weighted comparison of median percentages of converted clicks from added pages to converted clicks from gallery pages.

I guess that'll teach me to keep jokes simpler. :D

I wouldn't focus on the negative of having no index or main page links...yeah index/main page links get more clicks but when a submitter gets his/her freesite listed there's nothing in it for the linklist owner. At least with the fillers there's a chance for the link list owner of getting a sale from it and he gets to fill up categories with quality freesites.

Listen my children and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-five;
Hardly a man is now alive
Who remembers that famous day and year.
He said to his friend, "If the British march
By land or sea from the town to-night,
Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch
Of the North Church tower as a signal light,--
One if by land, and two if by sea;
And I on the opposite shore will be,
Ready to ride and spread the alarm
Through every Middlesex village and farm,
For the country folk to be up and to arm."

Yep... that's H.W. Longfellow's take on the event. But good old Paul only rode 19 miles on his famous midnight ride. Israel Bissel rode 345 miles for four and half days, non-stop, to spread the word.

“Listen my children and you shall whistle,
At the amazing ride of Israel Bissell."

Yeah... not quite as catchy. :)

I really don't. As I've told Chop before, I actually make sure to use all the filler sites I can as a way to say thanks for the work that goes into HFS Links.

Linkster is not only God (per Tommy), but a provacateur too. :)

Useless 2006-05-26 01:36 PM

I'd hate to be the one to get this thread back on track, since that's not normally in my nature ;), but has anyone given the RSS angle any consideration? Would you use it? How would you use it? What would your needs be? King of Siam: "Etcetera, etcetera, etcera."

I had a request concerning an add-on for the X Power a script. The way I understand it, they will use RSS to draw from the HFSLinks database to import our new listings into their database. Our end is coded and waiting for them to test it.

The only other enhancement requested was to allow the users of hfslinks.com the ability to select thier delimiter in the download file. In order words if you want to use comma or anyother character as the delimiter, you now can select it.

Now now - I dont really stir shit - I just throw everything in the blender and see what it makes |jester|

Simon 2006-05-26 04:39 PM

Chop - Besides X Links being able to import directly into their database via RSS, do you plan to make a general RSS feed address available? I'm interested to see how the feed would appear in a reader (in my case, the Safari browser).

PHP Code:

http://www.hfslinks.com/members/index.html?rssfeeds

This is not yet on the menu so you will have to paste it the address after you log in.

Let me know what you think.

Simon 2006-05-26 07:49 PM

I like it. It works fine for me. I logged and pasted that address into my browser and I went to the page where I could create my personal RSS feed link. I pasted that new link into Safari and the feed showed up just fine. :)

Will you be adding any other options to that feed? I can get the url, title and description in the feed, but not the sponsor name or the category.

I noticed that the actual feed address contains my username and password in the url. I wonder if encrypting that, or replacing it with a unique identifier of another kind, might be a good security measure.

Great!

Good point on the user/pass. I will get that and the options request checked out the first of the week and get back to you.

Thanks for taking your time to try it.

Robert Wuhl? Or did he borrow it from someone else?

Simon 2006-05-27 07:40 AM

I enjoyed Wuhl's "Assume the Position" show, but I think he got the rhyme from the History Channel's "Time Lab 2000" narrated by Sam Waterston. I'm not sure where they got it.

Simon, would you mind rechecking this. If the encrypting works for you, I will activate these enchancements by placing them on the menu.

Chop, it looks good to me. The new version generated the feed address below, which does not contain my username/password.

feed://www.hfslinks.com/members/rss.php?auth=97004277a2&sponsor=allsponsors&category=allcategories&type=1&date=20050101&num_results=200

The feed contents do have the affiliate codes they should, so I believe you have it working now. |thumb

Chop Smith 2006-05-31 06:34 PM

Good to know. Thanks Simon.

swedguy 2006-07-07 06:17 AM

And here I have been logging in to HFSLinks every now and then to see if the RSS feed feature is added, but no no.

For over a month it has been right here in this thread! Silly me. My night is saved.... I've got coding to do :D

Great job Chop |thumb

That little feature along with several others will be made public to HFS Link users after we return from the 'staff meeting' in Vegas
