800X600 rule?

I am just wondering why this rule is still in effect? I am guessing that 95% of people around the world are now viewing in higher resolutions than this, so in my humble oppinion the rule is obsolete... but what do I know, I am a noob to this

Also, many LL's that have this rule in effect actually violate it themselves on the LL, their site just doesn't fit into a 800X600 screen, if your own site doesn't fit, why expect others to fit?

This is not a complaint, I am just wondering

this has been discussed a few times...I think that the general thought is to sell to the lowest common denominator. If you make your sites at 800, everyone will be able to see it properly. There are still lots of people that surf at 800x600. I think you'll see this rule change eventually, though.

you have to remember - LLs and freesites are two different things. LLs don't have to conform to any rules - you're not really trying to generate traffic to it by submitting it, so it doesn't have to.

My server stats show that over 20% of my visitors are using 800x600. Too high a figure to ignore in my opinion.

Cleo 2006-06-23 12:27 PM

I don't surf with my browser set full screen so it doesn't matter that I use a 23" LCD as my main monitor.

My LL does fit very nicely in a 800 wide window BTW.

stuveltje 2006-06-23 12:43 PM

i make all my sites on the 800x600 even i have an bigger screen, i also surf and review at the size of 800x600, when i make the screen bigger then i have to use my glasses again, i find 800x600 a nice size, what i do found out is alot of webmasters who use 1024 to make their sites, that they have the right width 800 but hell the fonts on those free sites are huge on 800x600 check the same site in 1024 and the fonts are oke, a problem webmasters should think about when they make their free sites on a big screen

True, but my thinking is that the LL's dont want to annoy the surfers with left/right scrolling on the free sites they have, and if people don't want to scroll left/right on free sites, why would they be ok with it on LL's? So again... why make a rule that you dont comply with yourself, rules are generally in place to make viewing more pleasant for the surfer arent they?

well as a linksite owner you can make any rule you want, even your own ll dont fit the 800x600 rules, as a submitter you can take that rule or leave it, i dont see any problem with that.....dont like the rule, dont submit, like the rule do submit|huh

amadman 2006-06-23 04:46 PM

This rule still makes since to me.

Also like Cleo's my ll fits at 800x600 too.

JustRobert 2006-06-23 09:24 PM

With more than 20% still viewing in 800x600 it just makes sense. But if drops to less than 10% than maybe...

To make it easier I just review, build and even surf at this setting so its feels normal to me.

Is this screen resolution or browser window size?

iMan 2006-06-23 09:41 PM

It does seem a little strange that some link lists would have this rule, assuming that this rule is in place to ensure that no surfer have to scroll, yet at the same time they don't care if the same surfer have to scroll on their actual link list :D

But maybe there is some other reason for it. What do I know |loony|

|badidea| As soon as people realize that in order to build for larger screen resolutions, they'll need to increase their font sizes so that their text will be legible, then maybe I'll think you are all mature enough to handle the big boy resolutions. I'm tired of squinting when I adjust up to anything higher than 800x600. Most proponents of building for higher screen resolutions think they'll be able to somehow squeeze more ad space on a page, but that's because they haven't thought it through all the way. It's basic geometry people - work with me. I'm not going blind just so a couple of free site builders can rave over their 40 inch LCD monitors.

Careful there UW...that was a pretty damn useful post...ya don't wanna ruin your reputation yanno :D

UW is absolutely right. Building for the larger resolutions does not necessarily equate to more real estate for ads.

And just for the record, my link site does fit at 800 wide as does the new re-design that's about to be launched :)

Oh, I run on a 19inch flat screen at 1280x1024. But, I have FF installed with developer extensions so I can resize to 800 wide in a click |thumb

No 40 inch LCD? Cheap bastard!

I still use the same monitor that came with my Commodore 64 (which was a hand-me-down) :D

gotta love those FF extensions |thumb

I don't mind if a freesite scrolls a touch if I can see everything without having to move over to do so. I see a lot of LLs that break this rule do so without making the surfer actually scroll to see everything. I think that's esthetics over enforcement

oh and for the record, I built mine to fit 800 too :)

Exactly off Topic!

My C64 monitor was a 13" TV with a circular channel clicker right on the front of the TV.

Sorry I did not respond sooner, out to dinner and a drive along the coast with my wife.

I was actually going by what Toby had stated earlier. And if he had stated that he could see in his stats that they were less than 10% I would have question all those that know more than I, like yourself, if they had similar situations. Honestly I have no idea of what my surfers are surfing with or how Toby's stats pick up this info.

My screen resolution is set to 800x600 but I am on a 17" flat monitor that came with my dell 4 years ago. I am a cheap bastard sometimes.

But then again, when I was a kid we had a 15" TV and we liked it. I was even the remote control with my dad yelling from the recliner channel 9, back to 7, see whats on 11, oh screw it go back to 7. Good times, good times indeed! |jester|

tigermom 2006-06-24 02:46 AM

I try to build all of my sites to be less than 750 pixels wide, not freesites only. Maybe it's just my warped sense of aesthetics, I don't like seeing lines that are too long on my 1024.
