There are supposed to catch serious amount of mosquitos. I think cause the new house has all this crazy landscaping around it, it's causing shitloads of them at night. I can't even walk outside to toss out trash without getting bitten. No stagant water sources in the hood, no pools, ponds or anything. The nearest water source is the Atlantic Ocean 5 minutes down the road and from what I know mosquito's don't care much for salt water.
Found the top of the line model on ebay for a little over $200 and was thinking of getting it. But I don't want to get it if it works like crap.

I used to have a propane based system. And, it was a lot like beetle traps for roses. It killed a lot of mosquitoes but, it attracted a lot more than we would have normally had. So, it did make the area around the system mosquito free but just outside of the area, there were a ton of them ready to feed. Same with the beetle traps for roses. For those though, it attracted a bunch of beetles that either went to the trap or the roses.

Neighbor bought one of the propane ones and it didn't help at all. He lives right on the Intercostal waterway which is salt water and that also does not help.

A few years ago I bought three dozen Citronella Torches and put them all around my backyard. They made so much smoke that it was hard to breath and got black soot all over everything but did nothing for keeping the little blood sucking mosquitoes away.

I lived in the Keys for almost a year and we would cover ourselves with the cheapest product that contained the most Deet every morning, afternoon, and evening. We smelled like insecticide and I think I've still got health issues from the toxic effects but it did work.

My screened in porch works great.

I have a couple houses, and almost never see the bats.

Jugg - I've seen the same thing as Jim mentioned. You may wind up with a small skeeter-free zone surrounded by a zone with a now denser concentration of them due to the spill-over of the attractant effects.

Cleo - We still swear by DEET down here.

Mosquitto Control in the Keys has officers who actively seek out places where water can accumulate. If you have a rainwater barrel or a pond, they'll give you tiny fish to add which eat the skeeter eggs.

Tickler - Where I grew up, bats really did do a lot to keep the bugs away. Your suggestion right after Cleo mentioned the Keys made me laugh though. Evidently bats don't like it down here for some reason, as you can here... http://www.florida-keys-pages.com/interest.htm

Jugg - If they're getting thick around you, I'd guess that there's some water being held somewhere that you're not seeing. Maybe in a neighbor's yard, just over your property line. Or maybe just someplace you haven't looked. It doesn't have to be stagnant, just not (fast) moving. Down here they'll put their eggs anyplace that'll hold water after the rains.

They built a big bat tower up in Palm Beach but were never able to get bats to live in it. I guess bats just don't like Florida.

It's too bad about the bats because I would love to have bats living in a tower in my backyard and goats keeping my lawn trimmed too.

Sorry for the late replies. I had a feeling that if I bought one of those it would be a waste of cash. Funny, I was watching animal planet yesterday and they had a family who had the same problem. They ended up building a very small pond in their back yard with some flowers that dragon flies are attracted to and this is supposed to keep all nasty flying insects out of your yard as they eat them like the bats. I think the bats would be a really good I idea but I can see the neighbors now. Pellet gunning them out of the sky. I was over my friends house the other night and there were honestly the most amount of dragon flies I ever saw flying around. It was just about sun down, we saw 1 bat come and the DF were gone. Man I need something cause this is going to drive me nuts.

Bats move way to fast and erratically. My guess is that even the best trained redneck couldn't shoot one down with any thing less then a shot gun.

You still NJ? Mosquito season should be over in 4 to 6 weeks.
