FTP Problem

I just had something weird happen and hope someone can tell me what to do. I uploaded a page using WS_FTP Pro but when the page got on line, the file size was 0 KB. I try to view the URL on line and I get a blank page |huh When I view the source code, it's blank as well |huh Other pages upload just fine. On my hard drive the page is fine. Any ideas?

Thanks!

I guess you tried this several times...what type of page is it? plain html?

Licker4U 2006-09-01 07:24 PM

Yes, it's an index.html page.

That happens to me every once in a while with WSFTP Pro. It's usually a result of a time out error or something that causes my connection to be dropped. I just reupload the file and 9 times out of 10 that fixes it.

Did you try deleting the 0kb file on your server first before you uploaded the good file again?

Licker4U 2006-09-02 09:17 AM

Yes, tried letting it overwrite the original file, which didn't work. Then deleted the 0KB file and uploaded the file, nothing. I found another index.html file and downloaded it just fine. Tried to upload that same file and in less than a second FTP said "transfer failed". The index.html file was listed as being uploaded but 0KB again. |huh |angry|

Licker4U 2006-09-02 09:35 AM

Now this is weird. I deleted the file on line. Then uploaded the file and from the log of the transfer I get this. Notice near the end it says to delete the file first. But I DID! |angry| |crazy|

I may know the problem. When I'm sure I'll post it. Might be a little red-faced, but I'll post.

Try using Total Commander. Its trial, but you can work with it without registration. Otherwise just search for crack.
I use it and it has never let me down so far :) It's plain and simple and noob-proof, just for me :D

Are you sure the owner of the index is you and not apache or something you can not delete/overwrite?

terry 2006-09-04 08:33 AM

When you delete the file, try refreshing the view. Then upload. If upload doesnt work, try unchecking the pasv mode. You may also want to make sure that your program is still not trying to upload the first file, delete the queue.

OK I'm confused, you have a piece of software and since you don't want to pay for it you suggest that people search for a crack? What kind of crap is that. What if someone stole your design and claimed it as their own would you be pissed and announce it on every forum you could find?

There are numerous FTP clients that are free for the asking, filezilla is the one I use, so you don't need to rip someones software.

Do you also send your surfers to Fusker sites so that they don't have to pay for porn?

Maybe the best way is to telnet/SSH to your host, if that option is available. You can use a program called Putty for that. That is, if your hostig provider hosts on Linux and they allow SSH access. My host does, so I do maintenance from Linux command line.

The point is to delete the misbehaving file off server within your host server command line. That requires some Linux knowledge, and if you need some help just let me know.

Since we haven't seen a post that this is solved yet, let me offer some potential workarounds if you need that page to display and still can't upload it.

First ... Can you open and edit a file on your server with your ftp program? If you can, try opening the blank index.html file and pasting in the contents from your local copy of your index page.

Second ... Can you create a new file on your server with your ftp program? If you can, try creating a new file named index.html and pasting in the contents from your local copy of your index page.

-- you can also try creating a file with a different name, pasting in the contents you want, and then renaming the file.

core ftp also has a free version that is very good http://coreftp.com/

i have never liked wsftp

also by chance did you upload in sftp mode? sometimes its hard to overwrite if sometimes you use secure mode and sometimes don't

Fonz 2006-09-05 09:41 AM

Another solution might be that you just use your browser to upload your file.
I had a similar problem yesterday with an index that wouldn't get uploaded correct. I used my browser (ftp://yourserver.com) and everything went smooth.

Licker4U 2006-09-05 06:02 PM

I got a new e-mail address and had to re-register here at the board to post.

I checked the log after each upload try and got an error message about disk capacity being exceeded. After a little thought (and at my age that was a major chore) I realized I had exceeded the bandwidth plan that I had with my server. I moved up to a larger plan, and viola! everything was fixed. I figured I would be red faced over this...
