House Approves Strip Search Bill
Wednesday, September 20, 2006

A bill approved by the U.S. House yesterday would require school districts around the country to establish policies making it easier for teachers and school officials to conduct wide scale searches of students. These searches could take the form of pat-downs, bag searches, or strip searches depending on how administrators interpret the law.

The Student Teacher Safety Act of 2006 (HR 5295) would require any school receiving federal funding--essentially every public school--to adopt policies allowing teachers and school officials to conduct random, warrantless searches of every student, at any time, on the flimsiest of pretexts. Saying they suspect that one student might have drugs could give officials the authority to search every student in the building.

DPA supporters and others who opposed this outrageous bill called their members of Congress this week to express their disapproval. However, House leaders circumvented the usual legislative procedure to bring the bill to a quick vote. It did not pass through the committee process, but went straight to the House floor. There, it was passed by a simple voice vote, so constituents cannot even find out how their Representative voted.

The bill moves next to the Senate, but it is unlikely to be considered there this session.

Bill Piper, DPA's director of national affairs, said, "It looks like this bill was rushed to the House floor to help out the sponsor, Rep. Geoff Davis (R-KY/4th), who is in a tight re-election race. This vote lets him say he's getting things done in Washington. But I would be surprised to see a similar push in the Senate."

HR 5295 is opposed in its current form by several groups, including the Drug Policy Alliance, Students for Sensible Drug Policy, the ACLU, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Parent Teacher Association, the American Association of School Administrators, and the National School Boards Association.

DPA will be watching the bill so that if and when it does come up again, this wide array of opponents can mobilize to stop it.
So if allowing Foley to harass young boys for a year wasn't enough, they're now trying to force schools to allow workers to strip search any kid for any reason.

Forget about the lack of rights to keep your clothes on or The Constitution but how sick are these people that have a allow a pedo around young boys but not want to force strip searches?

That's just pathetic I would have been expelled for beating the crap out of the teachers if they tried anything like that when I was in school and even if that passes ima tell my kids kick em in the nutz if they try to get you to take your clothes off.

Sounds like a great way to boost enrollment at private schools, and ease the burden on the public school system

If they keep taking funds away from public schools then that will be the only choice. An uneducated population is so much easier to control.

That's fucking retarded. If a school official suspects a student has something hidden they can bring them to the office and call the parents or police. The potential for abuse by pedos, constitutional rights violations, lawsuits, and my favorite, angry parents beating the crap out of the asswipe that strip-searched his child is staggering.

It's obviously a sick attempt at cashing in politically on all the recent voilence in schools.

It is a job creation scheme to help reformed criminals find work. At last useful employment for Garry Glitter and Jonathan King.

I am just glad that my children are all grown and out of public school.

For those that have not had the pleasure of being in one in say 15 years it has changed. At least in our area. Something needs to be done.

I do not believe they really want to do strip searches. This is just their first move. They know it will be shot down. Then they will bring forward what they really want which will be lesser and everyone will think its a nice compromise because something really does need to be done so it will probably fly right thru without a problem.

For those that have kids still in public school go spend a day as a visitor. Wife and I did this a few years back and it opened our eyes. We just could not afford, plus they were all catholic, private schools in our immediate area for our 3 children at that time.

Catholic schools, huh? Kinda makes that whole strip search thing look a little less sinister. :D

This is the first I have heard of this...I can not believe it

lets just hope it doesnt go through all the way but it would not surprise me anymore if it does
