Are blogs just another flavor of the month(s)?

New is cool - been there done that.
As a surfer, I see blogging turned into splogging. (adult anyway)

Original blogs are a bitch to keep updated, similar to a LL.
Since the SE's have no control over what you link to, or promote, they can't be too far behind in eliminating all the crap, and ban them altogether. (much like LL banning a series IP's in one click)

Is the guy/gal with 500 domains, a custom program, and auto pinging the planet from some different domain every 10 seconds worth being listed on an SE? (the competition)

I'm not saying the sky is falling. Just trying to judge a time/effort vs payoff for the coming years question. Notice I said Years, not next 6 months.

Just wondering everyone's thoughts.

walrus 2006-12-29 07:21 PM

I may be biased but I think blogs are fine. The SE's will weed through the crap they way they always have and the blogs that have some built in quality will continue to rise.

Talk to some other bloggers, especially those who are into mass production. From what I can tell, within 6-9 months, they are living off of mostly image traffic and link trades. The quality SE searchs having long dropped by the wayside.

From what I can see, the SE's seem to be investing more into blogging than shying away from it so I think it will be strong for a number of years to come.

T Pat 2006-12-29 07:54 PM

I may be biased too, but I think blogs are just getting started as RSS Feeds and Feed Readers get more popular blogs will too.
Sure there's a lot of splogs but I think the cream will rise to the top and the shit will sink to the bottom

Cleo 2006-12-29 07:57 PM

Blogs… reading to snooze by.

Useless 2006-12-29 08:25 PM

True blogs, the ones with all the boring text ;), are probably worth their weight in future sales. Those spammy blindlinked photo blogs may do well in Google Images, but won't stand up against the real bloggers post-for-post.

GonZo 2006-12-29 08:27 PM

Viral marketing as a whole...2007 will be built around it.

SaucyPanties 2006-12-30 05:37 AM

I was reading Matt Cutts blog yesterday (Google Techie) he said that one of the big issues for 2007 was to sort out the spam blogs and people who run 100's of different ones with the same content. I expect some big changes with blogs for 2007 and that the genuine ones will stand up and be counted. I also believe (just my opinion) that adult hosted blogs such as thumb blogger could be penalised... Going off the subject he also mentioned how one 'spammer' had a website with over 50,000 pages, can you imagine that?

2msacras 2006-12-30 09:35 AM

i'd love if the se's would start to penalize splogs, ive been working more and more on actual blogs with some content - that being said I'd also like if blogs were just a flavor of the month - I wouldn't complain if there was less compeition.

docholly 2006-12-30 10:13 AM

According to the Pew report.. 8% of internet users actually keep a blog while 39% read blogs daily.

you can see the full report over here

Adult hosted blogs are nothing more than SE tools. They are Useless unless used properly in the grand scheme. With my 20/180 hind sight, the by-product of UW's excellent brain fart would have been one hi-quality blog as opposed to seven orphaned ones.

Oh yeah, all blogs are hosted and all the time invested is for a purpose. If Jim had AssPimpleBlog, I am sure he would not be writing it for his health and in order for it to be viewed the world's eyes I am reasonably sure Sparky would host it.

I see blogging as part of "Web 2.0" so I believe that "Porn Web 2.0" is already started with porn blogs. Surfers habits change, they expect more from Web, they expect quality for free.

Most successful Web 2.0 projects are the ones who started first. Digg, Wikipedia, Myspace,...

On line porn industry was a long time leader in web tech innovation. Today I believe we are slow compared to mainstream. Actually, we are going at the same speed and mainstream is in turbo mode.

dareutwo 2006-12-30 05:22 PM

Thanks all -
Nice to see a variety of opinions!

So Youtube is actually worth 1.65B with NO ad model in place? There has to be a pay model in place unless you want to spend millions in bandwidth every month for charity.

Currently, there's no real major hurdles to overcome for a standard desktop user. Bandwidth is cheaper, encoding vids is mainstream and optomizing pics is standard.
A lot is being done on the mobile end for adult, it's just the Wall Street Journal doesn't seem to report that much.

Johnny - Didn't mean to pick your post apart, but your reply was basically what I was looking for.

So a simple blog about a normal (me being normal hasn't been proven) guy working in the adult world, that does NOT splog unless something cool comes along, should be worth it down the road? (Like Cleos - though I'm a guy)
Maybe that should have been the original question.

I don't think a personal journal by a webmaster is the way to go for most of us because our lives are really boring. |yawn|
If there's a Micro Niche that really turns your crank I would concentrate on that, something Unique.
Or maybe something like a coaching blog or a single father’s blog |huh
But then I thought Plateman was crazy when he started his link list because I thought he would never catch up to the big boys and just look at all the link lists that have been started sense.
Just my two cents and it's probably only worth a penny |loony|

Thanks T Pat!
singlefathercoach.com is me. |thumb
Obviously mainstream, this will take a bit of time as I have other projects to get running, but I'm fairly certain I can make maybe a few cents a day in the big bad mainstream world too. (probably actually using the adsense built in for WP)
We'll see.

And yeah, I know we're a boring lot. |cry|
But I do believe I can do some good for other coaches and/or single dads.

T Pat 2006-12-31 01:40 PM

Right On|thumb
I think you will do great, I made enough off adsense this year to take care of Xmas and fly the old lady out to see her kids.

I was also a single father from like 4 till he flew the coup and I can't tell you how many times I felt like I was the only guy in the world that was a Mom/Dad so I bet you get a lot of interaction going on :D

jonnydoe 2006-12-31 10:05 PM

I think the days of google sucking up blogs is going to come to an end... As others mentioned good quality blogs will do well just like good quality websites do. After all it is a website ;-0 I hope to have some good quality blogs up here shortly myself...

I think the fact that I need to really think hard to remember when TGPs surfaced is one of main problems here.

It's been so long ago and really nothing changed since then. We take new tools like blogs and turn them into TGP clones. Worse yet we turned them into pic post clones. It's hard to think of anything new when all you need to do is put up some tits and asses. What else can we do then put pics and vids and occasional story?

Since I'm hardly an expert on Web 2.0 I tend to look at all this more as a surfer then a webmaster. I'm not even sure all these new trends are for real. Only thing I'm sure of is that I really enjoy all free quality mainstream sites that I've mentioned in my previous post.

Dareutwo, please rip my posts apart whenever you feel like it. I enjoy good discussion! |thumb

If you want really successful adult blog, there is a lot of hard work ahead.

One problem, for male bloggers specifically, is that our target audience is mostly men.

Female bloggers can charm male readers into daily visits, and can talk about a whole lot of things: their innermost feelings, what they did with their bfs last night, what shoes they want for christmas, etc. Male bloggers don't have that inclination or the luxury, unless we're running a gay blog.

It just hit me though - you can always lie! Finally I can be a woman!

Hmm what do you consider a splog? Is it a copied blog? When you say the quality blogs will last what do you consider a quality blog? My blog posts are true tidbits about my life, boring to most I am sure. I hate to think I am wasting my time. Well even if I am, I will keep at it, having to much fun doing it |thumb

Basicly, I consider it a splog if it has no redeeming value or contains all sales text.

Blogs like yours are great because while your still selling porn, there is some added value...a slice of your life.

I consider it a blog if it has a value beyond that of trying to simply sell porn.

Carrie 2007-01-02 11:02 PM

People have really been blogging since the 'net was invented. It's so very *not* Web2.0 that it's really cute when someone says it is. Blogging will still be around as long as there's a Net, long after the teens move on to the next big thing (think MySpace and GooTube joined together on steroids hooked into mobile phones, with video and voice chat and of course full gaming console accessibility).

As for the cream rising to the top - man, I wish. We've been wishing that for a long time, haven't we? And we're still having to fight the spammers daily, just as we have been for years. The cream doesn't rise to the top nearly as fast as the roach does that was hiding out in the bottom of the churn - and the cream goes bad long before he dies off. :)

The web has constantly been evolving, moving towards an extreme voyeurism where everyone is connected in their isolation. Blogs both feed that craving for interconnectedness and prolong the pain by keeping the user isolated; talking to his keyboard rather than a friend or loved one.

The adult blog that will really capture the movement will be one that leads two lives - one that users can check in on and get their fix while they're at work, because it's safe enough not to set off the porn filters; but one that also tells them where to go when they're home at night and can surf the dirty sites. How to actually accomplish that? I can think of a number of ways... it would be really fun to try. :)

johnnybg 2007-01-03 05:48 AM

You are right that blogs existed before the term Web 2.0. I was running blog like site a full year before I realized it's a blog.

Web 2.0 is not about new technology. It's a new concept of "semantic web" and since blogs fit perfectly in this category, it's safe to say that blogs are part of Web 2.0.

It's just like saying Flickr is nothing new since Google images done it a long time ago. Or Technorati is nothing new since Yahoo did it years ago.

In the adult world and thats the major problem. You dont get much free in mainstream.

As with anything, blogs that are interesting and entertaining, giving people reasons to come back or talk about it. Blogs that can stand on their own without SE help, though they will get SE help because they are good. SE's will apply the same rules to blogs as they do for anything else they send traffic to.

On the other hand, surfers, and webmasters for that matter, can be anyone they want to be, one of it's beauties, no one really knows you, so you are boring only if you want to be..:)
