Hosting Advice

I need a little input from everyone. I am looking at getting a dedicated server but after having a conversation with a friend I have some concerns.

1. Do I really need it? Right now I am running a linklist on one virtual host account and building sites off another separate virtual account. Total is less than 30 a month for about 60Gig of transfer. I don't use near that yet. I can only put one domain on each and I have few more that are just parked.

2. I now have to transfer xxxsuperlinks from GG (not complaining :-) ) but that requires yet another virtual account.

3. I would like to link the sites to each other for SE and page rank. Can I do this on a dedicated server without getting penilized? Can I get totally separate IP's and not just sequential IP's?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks for any help that you guys can give.

By the way, I have narrowed it down to either M3server or National Net.

MatrixFan,

If it fits in your budget... then do it...

A ded. server gives you plenty of room to grow.. and speed while you dont have mush happening..:)

..and they are "as cheap as chips!"

Honestly, I wouldn't get a dedicated box yet, if I were you. There's no reason to move off virtual hosting unless you're really starting to get stretch marks from growing too fast. I recently moved a bunch of domains from virtual to dedicated, but not before I was pushing 500GB/mo and the server I was on was getting way overloaded by lots of fools with tools, running lots of MySQL db's hogging the server.

So, unless the server you're on is overloaded or you're really starting to push enough BW in order for a dedicated to be cheaper per GB, I see no reason for you to move. As for how much room you have to grow on a virtual, any host worth its name will help you upgrade your plan on pretty short notice, in case you need it.

well first thing you have 2 of the best host on your short list :)

I'm with DamageX on this one - if you're not hitting 500 gigs a month, there's probably no need for a dedicated server.

As far as the SE/IP thing, you can probably ask your current host if they can give you static IP's for your domains - I assume they'd charge you a $1 or 2 per month sicne it's not a dedicated server, but that's probably worth it :)

It doesn't seem to me that you need a dedicated server. You should upgrade to a vitrual server account that gives you multiple ips and a great deal more bandwidth. A number of hosting places will even help you with a move to a dedicated server once you're ready for that step. I recommend Sinhost.

Thanks for all the replies. I decided not to get a dedicated box and upgraded my current virtual account. The only problem is the price for dedicated IP's is a little steep. 30 bucks a month for 4 dedicated IP's but it is still a lot cheaper in the long run.

I use webair and im not sure what you got on your upgrade but for $9.00 more than what you were originally paying you could get this package at webair.com

• 1000 MB Storage
• Unrestricted Bandwidth
• 5 IP Address
• Unlimited Email
• Unlimited Domains
• Free Ecommerce Setup
• Autoresponders
• Control Panel
• 100 GB Transfer
• Free Shopping Cart
• $39.95 mo.
• $0.00 setup

If your paying an extra $30 for 4 ip's you need to switch hosts.

bobchezule 2004-01-14 05:30 PM

I agree with Ben, it seems like almost $8 per IP is a little steep.

MatrixFan, we have worked with many webmasters who have started out on a small virtual hosting plan and have grown over time to running 2 or 3 dedicated managed servers now. I guess what makes us different than other hosting companies is that we consider ourselves as your hosting partner, working with you to make sure that you get a great deal and your sites are able to grow and meet your needs.

I can set you up on a customized plan for just $0.50/gig of bandwidth with no setup costs and we will move your content for you too! This would be a fully flexible plan so if you need to bump up your bandwidth 1/2 way through the month, that is fine! If you are keen and want to chat more about this, contact me directly at sales@chilihost.com.

Cheers,

Luke

After going back and forth with my virtual hosting company and finding out they are pretty much maxed on resources but "everything will be good next month" I have decided to just get a dedicated box. I went with M3server because they offered really good prices and from what I have heard, great service, plus I could not get the guy from national net to call me back |sad|. This just gives me more incentive to build and submit every day and now with the bandwith I get, I can try my hand at movies sites and maybe galleries instead of just free sites and my LL. Thanks for all the advice guys.

P.S. Cleo, I used your the link in your signature. :D

Whilst I agree with this statement... I really wanna know the origins of this term "cheap as chips" coz in the UK there's a bloke who has turned this into his catchphrase. :)
