GoDaddy shuts down website...

...because MySpace told 'em to.

http://www.alternet.org/story/47669/

Jim 2007-02-06 02:56 PM

I will never understand why anyone would ever use godaddy with as many problems as we see.

Bill 2007-02-06 06:33 PM

That is pretty crazy.

I wonder if other domains were shut down - apparently these leaked passwords were on dozens of other sites.

"What makes GoDaddy's actions even more disgusting is that the passwords in question had been leaked about 10 days before GoDaddy took SecLists down. They appeared on dozens of other security-related and hacker Web sites. Security expert Bruce Schneier had even written a column in which he analyzed the quality of about 30,000 of the leaked passwords. (Among the top 10 popular passwords was "fuckyou," which completely mirrors my feelings for MySpace.) So the point is the cat was out of the bag. The passwords were circulating, and MySpace needed to tell its customers to change their passwords. Squelching SecLists wasn't going to help protect anyone. And yet GoDaddy's general counsel, Christine Jones, defended its actions because she believed pedophiles would get access to children's names and passwords. "For something that has safety implications like that, we take it really seriously," she told Wired News editor Kevin Poulsen. "I think the fact that we gave him notice at all was pretty generous.""

Because some people refuse to listen. If you look across the boards at the (many) threads badmouthing GoDaddy you will usually find one post in the thread along the lines of "well I use GoDaddy, and I have never had any problems, so I am going to continue using them" (Kind of like the guy who jumps off the roof of a thirty story skyscraper despite the fact that someone told him he would hit the ground and die, then half way down he thinks "well I have not hit the ground yet, so I never will").

Drunk or not, and I am only talking about adult webmasters here...all anyone has to do is search godaddy on any board. And while there is the occasional person that claims to never have a problem, there are 5 that have.

I mean, when talking about a domain registrar, does it make a difference if it costs $2, $5 or $15? It is the security that counts. Imagine running a legitimate adult website and waking up finding out that your site has been shut down by the registrar.

It's bad enough waking up to find your website down and being told your HD took a shit and the host owner says. "I would love to help but I am on my way to a wedding". :) That is still a very sore subject losing so much data like we did :)

I got it, it was just a starting point for a rant. :)
Still, why do adult webmasters use godaddy. And I know it wasn't a godaddy site shut down. :)

bbwebmaster 2007-02-07 11:28 AM

oki doki, so, what is an alternative to godaddy then? DirectNic ?

Why do you feel that way? Back it up with something if you're going it make such a strong statement about a respected company.

Bill 2007-02-07 01:16 PM

I like Domain Name Systems - $15 a year if you have less than a hundred domains, and they are friendly to adult webmasters, and they have very responsive customer service.

Then let me establish myself as a newbie webmaster who had missed the discussions on godaddy. I registered a domain with them recently the day after received a sales phone call.
They girl identified herself and proceeded to "establish that I understood" the options on my domain name.
Her first question was why I had chosen a server other than godaddy's.
I responded that the server hosting the domain was experienced in the needs of the adult industry and webmaster.....silence.
No sale on the GoDaddy Hosting.
Next question is that she noticed I had a public whois..."Did I understand exactly what that meant especially since I dealt in adult content?"
I replied yes, and that in fact in the adult industry hiding your whois often meant you were up to no good.....silence.
No Sale on the private whois option.
At least replying you are a porn mistress will get them off the line.
I am looking suggestions for registrars for the 2 domain names I am registering today, if they don't give you telephone solicitors too!

Ive always used go daddy and never had any problems :D

Seriously though I have a few domains left there, the reason I used them in the first place a few years back was the ease of use, management of the domains etc. and ease of locking them and that sort of stuff. We dont get the ads here for them. I read the posts about the problems people were having with them, but it also comes down to slackness to transfer a bunch of domains, the extra cost etc. I only have a few there now and have not regd an new ones there for years, so I guess it has sunk in, the bad stuff I've read. Anything new now, I use name cheap, I havent heard too many things bad about them.

i am still with godaddy after almost 6 years with all my domains, sure i had some problems, but not any problem which couldnt be resolved in a easy way.............i hope i never have to get back at ya Jim...saying "yeah yeah i know you where so right that time, i should have listen":D till now i a still having all my domains at godaddy after 6 years.

stuveltje 2007-02-07 04:27 PM

its almost the same as with adult sponsors, some have shit with a sponsor while the other webmasters dont have problems with the same sponsor. So should i drop the sponsor who makes me alot of money because there are alot of other webmasters who do have problems with the sponsor?.....i had a time a sponsor fucked me bad with my sales, a friend of mine said i am gonna drop them too, i asked him why> he said because they fucked you... i said do they give you your money, h said yes, i said do you do well with them , he said yes, i said why the fuck drop them then? because they fucked a friend of you? fuck that, you are in this bizz to make money, i would feel bad when a friend of mine drop a good selling sponsor for him if i have problems with them, i dont want that, people have to find out themself whats bad or wrong, the only thing i can say if godaddy fucks me, oke i have had a good time there for 6 years, i was warned about the problems others had, but i still choose godaddy............my mistake..and then if that time comes i need to kiss Jims feet and say , damn you where so right:D

ecchi 2007-02-07 05:58 PM

Stuveltje - it is not a question of kissing Jim's feet and saying "you were right", it is a question of what you are going to do when some crooked asshole steals your domains and GoDaddy say "tough shit". Then you are going to have to start again at square one, and loose all the good work you have done up to now.

Remember, everyone, even the crooks know that GoDaddy is lax on security and refuse to help chase up problems, so the crooks know to hit GoDaddy customers for domains with traffic. And also remember this is an open forum, anyone can read it, even crooks (and dishonest people do read this, read a few old threads and see what some of the (now banned) ex-members have admitted to doing). So by saying "I use GoDaddy" you are saying "Hi guys, my domains get traffic, and they are really easy to steal". In other words, I would change register today, and I mean immediately, not in an hour or so.

Ecchi.. that is excellent propoganda..:)

I have over 500 domains with Godaddy and have done for > 5 years... with no more problems encountered than with the other 7 registrars we use..

In fact I would rank at least 3 other registrars way below GoDaddy for price, service, efficiency etc.

Most of the stories posted here about "problems" with GoDaddy.. lacked facts and support, other than people blaming GoDaddy for their misfortune... and if i remember correctly... half the stories, involved the so called "crook" having legitimate to the owners account.. which indicates password insecurity as the most likley cause.

Go Daddy aint the problem here... and as for "posting that you have domains at GoDaddy", being an invitation for crooks/hackers.. that is just garbage...

festeris 2007-02-07 07:35 PM

|badidea| Hmmm...Now ya got me thinking. I've got a number of adult domains over at Godaddy.

Will they lock them?

Can they?

I will admit I thought it strange that it was ok to register adult domains but you can't be hosted there?

Just to be on the safe side, I'm gonna move...any suggestions?|huh

I use godaddy, and I know I shouldnt I have heard many bad things about them. I will say I am more happy with them then a company I used to use. At least in price.I have mixed feelings about godaddy.

What I cant stand about godaddy is the lack of tech support. Many times, over the last year I have needed to call them for this, or that. When I call tech support, I expect tech support. They never can deal with the problem until I get pissed off. It takes at least 5 phone calls to get something fixed. They dance around the issue and try to kiss it off with some BS. They give you different anwsers. They always say O do this or do that and O by the way, it will take 48 hours for that to take effect so call us back if you have any problems. I had one girl send me through the roof, I was so pissed off I call up "Tech support" with an FTP problem. This girl has the nerve to ask me "WHATS AN FTP"? I lost it!
As far as my site goes, I havent had to many problems with it being down. I will say I have heard they like to hold domains hostage. I never buy domains from them just host them. The other thing that pisses me off is when they dont know how to fix your problem, and say "Well we can put in a help ticket to our tech support" (which there support to be) then when they didnt help you for the 4th time, try to sell you something, then say can I send you a survay. I always love slamming them on that. I got a phone call back one time from a supervisor about a bad review. I still didnt get through to him on my point.
Moral , I guess you do get what you pay for. I am at a loss when it comes to hosting cause before I was with another company, and they were not much better and I was paying $20 per month. At least here I get shit service, and pay a lot less for it. Not that, thats is all that much better.
