drm content?

If you have a paysite do you think it's worth it to drm the content? Do you think this helps with keeping a member for longer as they can't download it and just have it forever?

Why would making your surfers angry make them stay longer?

IMO DRM has too many downsides overall, so you would be better off not using it.

We discussed it a lot in the past and recently, but I'm still not convinced. You would need to have something very unique to sell a site using DRM. Check the reviewsites - all feature drm as a negative.

Yea I'm just asking. Not doing anything here. :) Just was curious on the subject.

Cleo 2007-06-26 11:00 AM

Even Apple is trying to get rid of DRM on its iTune's store.

On a kind of related unrelated subject we are going with H.264 format on the new site we are doing as in these test movies.

Yea. I have seen how EMI has stopped having the drm applied to apple store.

I'm just curious about this because someone I know is making a new site and is putting drm on the content. And being a mac person it sucks cause I'm helping him with stuff but when it comes to testing content, etc. I gotta boot up in parrallels and use vista to look at shit and I'm like this is lame.

Trying to convince him not to use it.

Cleo 2007-06-26 02:15 PM

So the paysite is going to require Vista to view it???

Wow they should get tens of a few dozen sales. lol

windows to view it. :( I know. I'm trying to convince otherwise. I'm just getting paid to install some scripts and manage some other stuff and when I'm setting up this drm content stuff I'm just kinda being like I don't think this is a wise move.

Person has been convinced. :) nice. Took day n half.

Cleo, wtf is H.264? I downloaded one of your sample vids and all I get is audio in real player. Is there an update? It would not even play in windows media.

It is a mpeg-4 format. QuickTime plays them not sure what else also plays them.

It is also the format that plays on iPods and AppleTV.

I dont think DRM will retain members longer, it just pissed people off. They paid for the content I dont see why they shouldnt be able to keep what they downloaded during their months as a member.

It seems to me that DRM is like aggressive copy protection on games; the pro's crack it and the legitimate customers have to put up with the nuisance.

Totally agree and am happy that I convinced the person otherwise. Will be nice now to encode things for iPod, PSP, and Zune for the site as well.

Cheers,
B
