Changing Link List Scripts
I am wondering about how much of a hazzle this is, I am thinking of changing from my home made link list script to a script made by pros. I ofcourse would have to get all the old listings moved to the new script, both the sites already listed and the sites in the submit queue. How do I do this as easy and painlessly as possible?
Has anyone tried this? Thanks Xallow |
I use Gossamer Links from Gossamer Threads for mine, but it is not really user friendly for imports. I do like the ease of customization though. It is rather pricey though (about $450).
There is a promising new link list script LinkX from JMBsoft. I just bought a copy and am going to play with it some. It's only $60 and does have an importer script, so that make it a plus! Customization is a little harder, but after you learn how JMBsoft does thing, it makes it a little easier. |
I also use JMBsoft LinkX on one of my sites and it's a very nice script.

I got the guys from Xpowerlinks to install their v.1 script and change everything on my LL to comply with their script for $180. Very nice script btw.

I haven't seen too many scripts that export. If the database is mysql, it shouldn't be too bad to get the data. Most scipts do have pretty good import functions. I use Dragon List, which I like. Excellent support and forum, plus it's pretty easy to configure and customize.http://www.dragonscripts.com/DragonList/docs/

I'm using an earlier heavily modified version of Gossamer Linsk.

I've never changed scripts, but one thing you should consider besides ease of importing your db is whether or not the new script will allow you to preserve folder structure and page names. If not, you've effectively lost all your pages to the SE's.

I have considered that, I have to be able to keep the folder structure and page names, also because I have a bunch of link trades on them

Like I mentioned, LinkX is very promising from what I have found, and the price can't be beat. You might want to look at it, after all, $60 isn't a lot to spend to see if it does what you want.
I tried the Xpowerlinks, and wasn't a huge fan. Gossamer Links (LinksSQL) is good, but expensive, and they don't seem to be doing much in terms of updating it. It does what you need, but for software that costs $450, I would expect them to update it a little more. What is it that Greenguy uses for his site? If I recall it wasn't that expensive and MrMaryLou helps with the support on it |
I have looked a lot a LinkX and I think I will be giving that a try, I just need to contact their support and find out if they can help me import the old listings and submit queue.

It has a very good importer. Just make sure everything lines up in the database, and then either paste it in or import it from a file. It will analyze the input and you tell it what each field is. For example:
http://www.koolkatpornlinks.com|My Site Title|Site Description|http://www.koolkatpornlinks.com/recip|koolkat|webmaster@koolkatpornlinks.com|Link Lists Then it will open a new page and you just tell it what each field means. For example: 1) URL, 2) Title, 3) Description, 4) Reciprical URL, 5) Submitter Name, 6) Submitter email, 7) Category and so on and so forth. You can also set them as to whether or not they are approved, so the ones you need to still review can be imported and set to unconfirmed. Just basically do two imports... one of your current active listings, and then one of your pending ones. |
