Recommended Linklist script?

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone here had any recommendations for a linklist/directory script.

I'm planning on starting an adult comics/hentai linkslist/directory along the lines of Hoes.com - clean, few/no banners, submissions hand-reviewed (for now...). It's a long-term project.

Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks if you can help.

Regards,
~ Latif

An affordable one is LinkX at jmbsoft.com

Latif 2008-01-19 05:47 AM

Hi Koolkat,

Thanks for the link. That's the first company I thought of (I had their site bookmarked earlier while looking for a toplist script).

I think I will probably go with jmbsoft actually. This will be my first linklist.

Does anyone else have any suggestions? Thank you.

I looked at several scripts, including jmbsoft (which I purchased btw) but ended up using Dragon Links. It's more expensive, but I am able to build my site around the script rather than vice versa. I believe JMB can be very flexibl too, if you take the time to dig into the code. I just don't have the time to do that. Having said that, jmb offers a lot for a small price and most of the sites that use it look good. I certainly don't think you can got wrong with it, but do take a look at Dragon Links.

I recommend LinkX too. I used to have Xpowerlinks, Link Admin and Gossamer Links SQL, but I wasn't satisfied with them.

I second Dragon Links, easy to use and implement on any template you have, easy to use and understand. (I am not a coding geek, so I needed something easy):D

Hi all,

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply. I'm looking very closely at LinkX right now. DragonList looks pretty good as well.

Do you guys think I'll be able to run it on a semi-dedicated server rather than a fully-dedicated one?

It'll be a somewhat niched linklist (adult comics/hentai).

Or if anyone else has any advice regarding a good (ie. easy to use - "for dummies") linklist script, or any other 1st-time linklist advice, it would be great to hear from you. Thanks to all.

Incidentally, I'm leaning towards LinkX right now rather than Dragonlist.

LinkX:
- much less expensive
- I am also interested in their Toplist script
- accept credit cards
- free lifetime support/upgrades

Dragonlist:
- looks more easily customizable, possibly easier to use
- no payment by credit card

Latif, if your LL doesn't get high traffic you can buy virtual host. I started with a such cheap virtual account, and I changed to ded when I needed more resources and bw :)

If you decide to buy LinkX, be prepared to spend a few days on your templates... it needs a lot of time if you want to have a unique site, but it's worth :)

Latif 2008-01-20 09:51 PM

Thank you Varion for your input.

I think I will upgrade my hosting account to semi-dedicated. (I already have virtual hosting.)

Yes, I think this linklist will be successful. I do very well in adult comics/hentai niche.

(By the way, nice to meet you. I have been submitting occasional freesites to your linklist for years. Your LL sends GOOD TRAFFIC!)

DITO_RHINOPAYS 2008-02-06 12:31 PM

I use linkx and I am very satisfied with it! I did not have the patience to customize it to it's fullest potential so I got someone to do it for me! If you would like thier contact him me up!

Tobbe 2008-02-06 01:09 PM

Well i have not tryed LinkX but i can recommend Dragonlist!

balls_deep 2008-02-06 01:31 PM

LinkX is great, but its gonna take some serious coding to customize it.

Latif 2008-02-06 06:51 PM

Thanks for your responses guys.

Thanks DITO_RHINOPAYS for your offer I appreciate it! I think I will try to fiddle with the code first, if it gets too hairy I'll contact you.

My hosting account has finally been upgraded to semi-dedicated, so I should be installing the LinkX script as planned sometime this week. (scared)

you'll be fine installing it...I haven't installed it on any of my sites but I've installed JMBSoft's TGPR and TGPX several times...let me know if you need any help...that's a good choice...JMBSoft has never let me down and I recommend anything Jeremy (the script owner) does...he's a good guy and the online customer support forum is a wealth of info...best of luck

Exxxxxxxcellent, thanks a lot easymama. Yeah, ok, it's definite now, I'm going with LinkX.

I think I'm going to let JMBsoft install it... it sounded like a fairly complicated process to me... unless someone tells me, nah you should do it yourself (I have very little knowledge of server stuff, I know how to CHMOD...). This is my first linklist / directory of any kind.

balls_deep 2008-02-06 11:22 PM

they give you step by step instructions, you could always try yourself and if that doesnt work shell out the money for the install.

secretagentwilly 2008-02-06 11:33 PM

I say try to install it yourself first...think of it this way...in your webmaster career, you're going to always try bigger and better things and installing a script is essential to trying new things...if you have deep pockets then fine, but if you don't, I'd try it on my own for sure...the worst thing that could happen is that you delete everything and delete the mysql database and you try again...you'll be shocked at how easy it is...$30 a pop can add up real quick...try it on your own and if you can't do it, I'll help out...that's not a problem hit me up ICQ or pm or something...I'm not trying to screw JMBSoft out of $30, but it's the dependence on foreign oil analogy...you can't rely on other people in the webmaster biz...you'll get screwed all day long and pay a pretty price if you do...give it a shot and let me know if you have an issues...as I said, I don't use LinkX, but I use TGPX and use TGPR (well not anymore) but they all install the same...walk in the park Kazanski

secretagentwilly 2008-02-06 11:35 PM

oh yeah, do yourself a favor and install it in the /linklist/ or /ll/ or some directory other than the root...you need a gateway anyway for a disclaimer so that's where your index page should be with your warning and then click on the enter link and end up and /linlist/ or /ll/index.php just a tip I figured out the hard way... =)

Latif 2008-02-08 08:12 AM

Good advice guys, many many thanks, I'll try to install it myself.

Easymama - thanks very much for your offer. I will definitely contact you if I have any problems.

(and hopefully I can trade links with you all in this thread, to your category pages if applicable, once I get this adult comics / hentai directory going. It rates to be a successful project, as I know the niche pretty well and control a good amount of hentai traffic.)

Latif 2008-02-26 02:04 AM

Hi GG+Jim webmasters,

Well I have a new links directory up - thanks to all here for your help.

http://www.comixxxfan.com/directory/

Here's my thoughts on the LinkX script from JMBsoft:
  • I pared the script down to the bare essentials - wanted to keep the design clean and simple.
  • I found the tech support to be very good and I'll probably need it some more.
  • I find working with the template system to be pretty difficult to figure out at times but that's probably true of any complex linklist software you might use. (Anyway Jeremy probably will answer all questions promptly - that's been the case so far.)

Installation was not that hard, must know how to CHMOD.

Overall, I like it. ;-)

Comments or questions on my new directory or the script itself welcome. It's also open for submissions (hentai / adult comics freesites and blogs).
