My New Tattoo - Lots of Dots ;)

Well MadHatter started on my new tattoo today. I like this one because it has no outlines like a traditional tattoo does, the lines are all a series of dots. A LOT of dots, lol.

This has got to the be the first tattoo that MadHatter probably was more sore from bending over, then I was getting it. I'm pretty numb in that area, so it tickled more than it hurt. Wish I could have said the same thing about the one on my ankle.

Once I heal up, we will use some colored dots to make the inside part look more 3D. Sizewize, it is 4 1/4" long by 2 3/4" high, so not a real big tattoo. What do you think? :D

Nice :)

RedCherry 2008-01-19 11:46 PM

Thanks Cleo. You sure have some great tatts. Like the one in your avatar.

Cleo 2008-01-19 11:52 PM

That one is my favorite so far.

I've been wanting to get something on my left wrist but been having trouble deciding on what to get. I was going to get a gecko but then thought of getting a scorpion instead.

I can't wait to see what yours will look like with the colored dots added.

Fonz 2008-01-20 04:39 AM

Looking good RedCherry. I hope Madhatter doesn't "tickle" you too much :)

Paul7 2008-01-20 05:35 AM

really nice one. I was thinking to get one too but I'm a bit afraid of needles :(

Bobc01 2008-01-20 07:17 AM

Looks similar to the maori type tattoos.

docholly 2008-01-20 08:06 AM

OMG that looks awesome!!

Now I want another Tat.. I think RugDawg and I need to come up for more than just 1 day.

It is amazing that I have 2 tattoos because I'm needle phobic. And Emerald, I really dislike pain too. My ankle tattoo dispite taking darvocette still hurt, but this one was uncomfortable at most. I never thought I'd be happy about having pinched nerves, lol.

I even watched him do some of my ankle on Thursday, (we added more colors) and today I'm going to stretch his arm for him while he works on it. A year ago I couldn't even watch him tattoo, lol. You get used to it and the needles are so tiny and move so fast, you can't really see them anyways just the ink going in.

The design is a combination of two ancient designs. the outline symbolizes the waxing, full and waning moons, which represent the maiden, mother, and crone aspects of the Goddess. The 3 swirls in the middle of the full moon is the triskele, a celtic design that is associated with druids. Combining them like that I haven't seen before...we came up with that.

There are VERY few tattoo artists that do pointilature (not sure how to spell that) but drawings that are composed of dots. For one thing, it takes longer because you don't do lines. That took about 2 hours which we have found is about our limit for a sitting.

MadHatter used to silk-screen t-shirts he designed that were all dots for all the shading, althought they did have some linework. When he started getting back into tattooing and saw how few did these types of designs, I told him he should specialize in it.

I've thought about getting a celtic knot bracelet on my wrist, using the black dots, then various green colors for the colors but my wrists are the one part on me that is pretty skinny, and after the fun of tattooing on my ankle bone, I've held off designing anything, lol. Eventually I might get brave enough.

I love it |thumb

It's so different with no lines, I also can't wait for the finished project!

Great job MadHatter!

thats a nice tat!

Nice tattoo. You know, I once said I didn't like tattoos. I realized what I didn't like unimaginative ones. Yours is quite nice. I like the dot effect.

MadHatter 2008-01-20 03:12 PM

...it is straight...honest!

....it is lookin' a bit warped because she was sitting a bit crooked at the desk when I snapped the pic. The circle and moons are correct....but there is a lot more to come on that one! Ginny will experiment with different colors, and when she knows exactly what she wants to finish it....we will get the machines out again! I always hate seeing unfinished pieces....but I am sure this will be pretty cool after the next sitting! Funny how this one didn't hurt on her neck, that is often a tough area, but it was extra-nice for me, no jumpin' around! ;-)

murray 2008-01-20 09:32 PM

Thats a nice design, I really like it. I think it looks hot without color, but ims sure would like to see what the finished product will be.

Emmy tats dont hurt....much:D

this one was my latest one, its a full arm band, it took just over 5hrs and the pain for 4 days after was intense, I couldnt even sleep.

It's actually pointillism. (Art Major coming out in me here...) In painting it is done to achieve a brighter look that "pops" off the canvas. Colors normally aren't mixed in pointillism because it tends to dull them. (Look up tint, tone, and shade for explanations on dulling/brightening of colors by mixing.) When your eye sees millions of tiny dots with differnent colors right next to each other (such as blue+yellow=green) your brain automatically mixes the colors without dulling them. It also has more of an impressionist feel. Georges Seurat is probably the most well known painter who uses this style.

It does take a long time... but just remember it's unique and that makes it all the better. :D Very nice...

Very nice..:) My wife got one on her wrist not long ago, first one. I am still chicken and haven't found any design that I really like yet.
