For a small set of sites and/or blogs..is the hardlink trade between then feesible or is a ABC type of set up more productive? Also would one-way linking to a large site of absolute relevance help with SEO?

I've only ever heard the owners of 'big' sites say that. Frankly, if I owned an authority site, I'd be telling people that it would be good for them to put up links to me too. Is it fact or mis-information? No way of knowing.

I see alot of people chasing their tail trying to out-think Google. I simply don't have the time to keep up with the latest and greatest linking strategies and still get anything else productive done.

I optimize for sales, do basic SEO on the pages themselves and do a few old school AB link trades. My time is better spent doing other things that make me more money.

Ditto. Way too much to concern myself about.
