Search engine Submission

This is my first post here so Hi everyone
I have been reading up about search engine submission and as I see it there are the big 5 that provide the results for all the well known engines i.e. msn, yahoo, aol. All of these 5 spider so if you build up links with directories they will find you and list you in a month or two.
So my question is is there any need to submit direct to these or 5 or to the search engines they provide for?
Also is the $600 dollars to get looked at for yahoo directory worth it?

I've been told it's better to let the SE find you instead of submitting.

As far as the $600 for Yahoo, I'd only do it if it was my own paysite.

If you can get some decent return, then the Yahoo 600$ extortion can be worth it.. but you need to check the category you will be submitting too..... and make sure there arent too many..
