Pre-Newbie question: Domain names

Hello all. GG&Jims's has been invaluable and I have learned a lot. I plan on moving forward in the next week with designing my first free sites.

Now my question...

I have noticed a lot of free sites reside as sub folders under a domain. So should I get one domain name and construct all my free sites underneath that domain? If so, what should I do with the top level domain page?

Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated. That is if anyone understands what I'm asking.

Split them up if you can, and get unique domain names and unique IP addresses. It'll cost a bit more but it'll help with SEO.
Goodluck

But I see people here talking about creating hundreds of free sites and some people making 1 a day everyday. It is inconceivable to me to have unique domain names for all those. I do understand how it would help with SEO but how practical is it really?

WHat do others think and do?

AH! Misread your question there. Sorry man. Yeah, getting a unique domain and IP for all of them would be silly. Disregard that comment :p

In that case, yeah get a domain that is fairly generic if you're doing lots of different niches or something more exact if you know what you're focusing on.

Sorry for the confusion :)

I'm sure it was my unintelligible writing that caused ur confusion. :D

So if I got something like sexflex.com (just an example), what would I put on the main domain sexflex.com? I just use this as another space for a free site or what?

a single domain with a good keyword or two should do the trick. It will at least get you started.

A good idea for the root of the domain name would be to make a hub of all of your sites. When your starting you won't have any, so maybe put up a site with links to your best sponsors as a sort of a filler until you can do something original with it.

I agree with sheepguy and balls
1 domain for all your freesites and the main page as your freesite hub.
