Hi Speed Internet: Why do you pay and what do you get?

I got a note from my ISP (Rogers) that there would be download caps on my high speed service at 60GB per month. I pay C$44.95 and for that I get a 7Mbps download speed and 512K for uploads. It made me wonder what others get. So what do you pay and what do you get?

I dont believe there are any caps on my Hi-Speed..I pay I think $49 but not sure 'cause I have the premium cable package with it...and I pay 'cause if I had to do what I do with dial-up Id shoot myself.

I've noticed alot of ISP's over here capping downloads now, i pay £23 a month for 8Mbps, not sure on the limit anymore as it used to be unlimited.

I think i pay $54 a month for charter highspeed...I've heard talks of download caps since that study came out that said something 5% of all users are responsible for 90% of the downloading...download caps or bands is a scary scary thought...google needs to hurry up and give everyone free broadband from coast to coast... =)

Try Sympatico, I used to used to use Rogers and I'm glad I don't anymore.
Not sure what Sympatico gives me, but a couple of buddies have left Rogers because of caps.
I pay about the same as you do.

I've got Fiber Optic from Verizon FiOS & I pay $70 for it & my phone lines (up to 4) It's really fucking fast.

Ramster 2008-03-27 08:58 AM

I'm on Rogers too. Caps? That's not cool. I download very little but I surely upload a lot of movies for my paysites.

Stay away from Sympatico. There is no worse service here then with them. Because of where my house is situated I have no other choice for high speed so I am stuck with all the problems.

I am on with support on a weekly basis. I think I know everyone in India now.

My last contact with them I found that their "High Speed" is old technology with only 5 Mbps and we are better off using the faster "DSL Performance". Its offers 7 Mbps and also has a 30Mb cap, just like "High Speed". Its 41.95 monthly and includes their Security Solution.

Of course when my bill came in, they charged me for the High Speed service AND the new DSL Performace service so now I am fighting them for a credit.

Anyway, I am starting to shake as I type this so I need to change the subject.

One of these days we will get reliable fast service where I live. In the mean time I pay a lot for not so great not so reliable service.

Main internet when it's working is Comcast cable. I pay $76 a month, I don't have cable TV (I use DirecTV for TV) so pay a premium for cable internet without cable TV. It is suppose to be 12Mbps down and 768Kbps up but it is more like 5 Mbps down and 500 Kbps when it is actually working.

For when Comcast isn't working, at least a few times a week and not for months at a time after a hurricane I have Earthlink ADSL, $36 a month, with is 1.5Mbps down and 128Kbps up. I've tried to get faster ADSL but everything is too old in my neighborhood. I also have to play ATT $23 a month for a line to carry the ADSL since I don't have a phone line for voice (I use Vonage for a land line) but this line is also used for my alarm system.

Since all the poles and lines in my neighborhood are very slooooowly being replaced some days I don't have internet at all. It's days like this that I'm very happy that I have an iPhone so at least I can still check my email and surf without having to grab a laptop and visit a wifi hotspot.

Cleo - look into Verizon & see if they offer FiOS in your area. I know they have a deal up here with DirectTV as far as a bundle of internet, tv & phone for $100 (for the basic package)

Already did. They just might have service available here before the end of this century.

Ramster,

They sent me a letter and brochure that eases you into the concept. It reviews your current package, the volume you're currently downloading (over the past 3 months) anf explains how the caps will affect you. I only download 20-30 GB so I am well under the cap. There was no mention of an upload cap. BTW, the Extreme and Extreme Plus packages let you upload at twice the speed 1000 Kbps.

You all make me want to |cry| I pay 29.99 for AT&T DSL which given I'm a little too far away from the central office for faster speed I get 768kb down (yes, that is less than a meg people) and 350kb up. It is always that speed though so I get nice steady uploads which are great.

My other service I pay 29.99 a month for AT&T Wi-Fi. At its fastest it is about 1.5 down, at its slowest about 500kb. I don't use it at all for upload because it is so fucking slow, like 3 - 10k or something like that.

We have tried all kinds of things but every time they bring something into town for faster high speed, they oversell and the speed dies. I even tried HughesNet which was a joke on upload speed slowness. They don't have cable internet to me (and I'm only 3 miles from their office yet they haven't strung fiber optics to me yet).

I'd love to move my house closer to the AT&T central office, I have a friend getting 6MBS download where he lives. |cry|

Good for you... I pay $110.94 for 4 MB so called hi speed. The phone has also be paid because we don't have naked adsl here. And no tv in it.

I'm on Extreme, the best Rogers offers. I will keep an eye out for my next bill/brochure.
