There's 2 ways to look at OT (and take it from someone who knows)

1 way is from the companies point of view - working 4 guys 10 hours (8 straight @ 2 at time & a half) is CHEAPER than working 5 guys 8 hours (no OT) - this is due to benefits & insurance & other costs that are not really taken into account when you look at salaries or wages

The other way is that, based on the scenario above, you'd have to hire a few more people to do what the others were doing on OT, which means more jobs & less unemployment.

OT is great because of the extra money, but it sucks because of the longer days & lack of time with the family.

Personally, I think the "real" would should be more like our little porn world - everything based on comission - the harder you work, the more you make. I've worked with & got paid the same amount as some really moronic slugs in my time - LOL

well, the problem I have with what Bush is trying to do here is that when I worked construction, for small companies, There were times I held the title of 'forman'. It seemed like an honorary title. Sure I made a few cents more an hour than everyone I worked with, but it was basically a position that my bosses could yell at when something screwed up. the only thing I 'managed' was to stay employed heh heh. But I got OT by the bucketful. I didn't want it. At the time I had a young wife, a baby, and my desire to be playing in the dirt or knocking over widowmaker pines just wasn't there. Didnt mind putting in my 40, but wanted to be home past that. Many was the 60-70 hour work week. The money was great, not that I got to spend any of it, I was working or sleeping.
But that was the norm. summertime comes, your gonna work long hours. Long hours meant more money. It seems to me as though Bush wants to get rid of that for a LOT of workers. Not all, but plenty by reclassifying them as managers, and making it easier for bosses to make them salary. Thats a big hit for someone to take financially, esp if they live paycheck to paycheck, like I did. I worked construction in the south, so it wasn't as seasonal.
I don't know, I agree with GG that some people, no matter what their job field, are way overpaid. I have seen guys standing around watching one guy work for an entire day, occassionally kicking a dirt clod aside with their shoe, and still drawing a paycheck, and that what you actually do should be what your pay is based on. But that won't happen, but this bill may.
