Web Hosting Survey

I'd like to ask each of you, especially those that don't host with us, to take this brief, ten minute survey. Most of the time when we develop new hosting products or platforms, we do it because we see things that need to be fixed, however, we've designed something we think might be a marketable new service.

The survey is anonymous, so, please only take the survey once. Feel free to pass the url on to friends if you would like. We're not collecting email addresses, names or any other personal information and aren't going to try to sell you anything at the end of the survey. This is merely a method to collect unbiased opinions to make sure we're headed in the right direction.

Thank you for your time.

Jim & I would like to ask that EVERY board member take this survey :)

Cleo 2008-05-22 09:27 AM

I took the server survey.

Did I win a lifetime of free hosting?

Since its anonymous, it would be really hard to reward prizes. I debated whether to ask for information as there were certain people I was really curious to know their answer to two of the questions.

I have to admit though, some of the answers are surprising. It'll be interesting once there are 50 or so surveys completed if the early trends continue. Its like my own little electoral battle.

I took the survey too. Colo-cation has been great and thanks for the wonderful service. A big thanks to Brian also. He has helped us a few times with moving sites from Godaddy to Colo seamlessly.

kind of early in the morning to take a test , glade I didn't have to worry about flunking cause I didn't have a clue about one of those questions |huh

I was a bit surprised at the backup question.
Mirrored RAID is great for no down time unless you get data corruption like if you get hacked so I would want Mirrored RAID and versioned backups.

(I do nightly versioned backups to my Mac mini using a combo of rsync and Time Machine so I don't really worry about this.)

If it is the question I think it is, based on the survey responses, you are in the overwhelming majority. :) That isn't an unexpected result -- even I was unsure when I wrote the question.

It must be the question that made me think of the title of that horror movie, Cloverfield. ;) As many of you know, I've been with far too many hosts. I change hosts around twice per year and I still had no clue about that particular question.

Not really - mine is the one that says "Hi Sparky!" but I'm guessing you already knew that :)

actually, I had attributed that to someone else, but, knowing it's you, one of your answers isn't at all what I expected.

I had debated whether to make it totally anonymous which I felt would get more honest answers, or, asking for some way to identify people to see whether their answers fit my assumptions. I went with anonymous because I figured some people might hold back from giving me their opinions which would invalidate some of the results if people told me what they thought I wanted to hear.

You assume I knew what all those words meant & I wasn't just selecting one & hoping I got the answer correct :)

SheepGuy 2008-05-22 02:24 PM

I told him this question should have included previous hosts as well and signed it :) "Have you ever lost data due to a hardware or software issue at your current host?"

You're correct. That just occurred to me when I took the survey myself. I have lost data on two former hosts, but not (yet) on either of my current hosts. I think I answered that question with 'no', but in truth, I've definitely lost data in the distant past. Once due to a virtual server being thoroughly hacked, and once when my dedicated box decided to become a paperweight.

Better wording would be "Have you ever lost data due to a hardware or software issue at your current or past host?"

bluebrit 2008-05-22 03:24 PM

Survey Done.

I use colo and the service provided is great. I don't think there has ever been a time when you haven't had the right answer for any of the crazy questions I may have asked |thumb

Same thing here - I think I clicked it because I've had 2 HD failures in the past on 2 separate hosts.

Once again I apologize to everyone I ever referred to AllWebSites :(

Had it been that way my answer would have been yes which is why they are a past host!
