Judge Orders YouTube to Give All User Histories to Viacom

I'm in Canada, and giving my info to some US company can open a whole can of whoop-ass with our privacy laws. |catfight|

Taking into account the $750 fines/view for copyright infringement there could be huge money here.

Google will have to turn over every record of every video watched by YouTube users, including users' names and IP addresses, to Viacom, which is suing Google for allowing clips of its copyright videos to appear on YouTube, a judge ruled Wednesday.

Damn now they are going to find out I've been watching show tunes and the mating rituals of platapusses.

Could this be the beginning of the end for tube sites?

oh hell the wife and I spent a couple hours looking at puppy videos, their really going to think I'm a sicko|loony|

Let's hope they crush a bunch copyright thieves and still maintain reasonable privacy. My personal hope s that Google looses, then goes after the cocksuckers that uploaded the stolen videos in the first place. I make it no secret that I want copyright thieves to burn in hell.|acid

Luckily I've never spent much time there but now that Cleo mentions it, I think I want to see platypuses fucking.

What is amazing is also what Viacom originally asked for in the suit. They functionally asked for -all- source code used by Google and YouTube. Thats like Oracle demanding the source code for all Windows versions from Microsoft. That the judge even considered it was some scary shit. On the other side of the coin Google remains the #1 threat to user privacy in their unceasing quest to peddle off all the information they can gather. Their logic has always been "if we can gather it - we should be permitted to sell any of it to anyone we want". The copyright matters on the face of the issue are only a small portion of the privacy and security threats created by Google.

Then again maybe in the process they will expose the long underground platapi slave trade. Getting so a self-respecting platapuss can't even use a public restroom without being molested. Sexy little trollups they are...

Viacom learning that I like to search for "teen booty shake" and "busty girl jogging" on YouTube doesn't concern me quite as much as the Patriot Act. As much as I love Google's traffic, I do hope that they get fined harshly enough to make them clean their act up on copyright issues.

LD 2008-07-04 04:45 PM

Hope it's all about copyright and not about privacy. Still, even though it might be about copyright now doesn't mean that somewhere down the road some asshole won't use the information against you.

papagmp 2008-07-04 05:56 PM

Ya - so hide behind steeling using the fucking "privacy" BS

Google Refuses to Turn Over YouTube User Info to Viacom

Greg Sandoval of CNET News said that the case may hinge on whether Google can keep the activity of its YouTube employees secret. "It could go a long way to proving how much knowledge YouTube has about piracy on the site," he said. "If YouTube employees knew what was uploaded to the site or posted pirated clips themselves —YouTube could lose its protection under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act."

Seems that they are going to mask the user IDs.

Viacom, YouTube agree to mask user data
YouTube will be allowed to mask important user information from records it must turn over to Viacom, Google said in a blog post Monday.

"Viacom and the other litigants have backed off their demand for YouTube user viewing histories," Google said in a statement. "We have reached agreement to anonymize the data."

When Viacom wanted Google employee records for possible file uploading, Google came back at hem and asked the same from Viacom employees so they both agreed it was a bad idea |jester|
