.us domains?

How useful are they?

I was playing about looking for some cool domains I could buy and picked up slut.us (literally 2 seconds ago, so nothing is set up as yet!)

I would have thought something like a four letter porn word would have been plucked up right and quick?

It was only a tenner, so I thought worst comes to worst, I could palm it off on a webmaster who knows even less about the value of domain names!!!

GAH - It wasn't actually free!!! My hosts have refunded me, but bloody hell that is annoying - porn.us was also "available" as well.

Grrr.

Where were you looking?

If you're planning on using it for hosting galleries or free sites to submit you'd be wasting your time. Most of us won't list those oddball TLDs

some of these top TLDs cost more than the .com , for example the .me domain cost about $19 per annum.

I am sure the more obvious choices like fuck.me and date.me were snapped up quickly.

.us is the ccTLD for the United States. If you got a submission from someone using a .co.uk or .ca, would you reject it? If not, then why would you reject the .us submission?

If the FS or galleries are well-built, what difference does it make what TLDs your LL links to?

Tip: When checking domain availability, always go straight to the registry. Many people have reported that obscure / unusual domains searched at a registrar, get registered by someone else the next day, while they're thinking it over.
For .us go to http://www.whois.us
For .com/.net go to http://registrar.verisign-grs.com/whois/

The policy behind rejecting most non-.com submissions is based on the fact that many webmasters intentionally purchase the .net, .info or .whatever of an established site in an attempt to leach SE traffic.

I agree with the justification for non-.com sites that try to steal traffic from an established .com site with non-generic keywords. The same criteria should also apply to .com domains which include trademarks that belong to others.

However, I don't think such a policy should apply to sites using truly generic terms like Slut.tld or Porn.tld

I use .us for blogs, and they seem to work just fine :)
