When do you delete a site that's 404
I was checking submitted sites and found one that is 404. I know servers go down, etc. so how long do you wait before you delete the site from your list or does 404 mean the site is totally gone forever?
|
If I know the submitter and he/she is in good standing with my link list, I send them an email before deleting their links (that turn up 404). Usually it's a hosting issue and is fixed soon. If it's a site from a little known submitter or they've only got a few sites listed with me, I go ahead and remove them when they come up 404. Hope that helps.

If the server is down, you do not get a 404 message. You get a No DNS error. The 404 message is loaded FROM THE SERVER :)

Good enough for me, the site is deleted. Ahhhh, if only I had a script that could do the checking automatically instead of me doing it manually...

There are link checkers you could use but its better to do it manually IMO. That way if you click a link and its not what you expected or it's redirecting for example your able to deal with it straight away. I usually choose a random page and go through every link on that page. Anything unusual gets more attention and I will send emails if a site is down but if it's a blatant redirect or something nasty, not only do i pull that link but any other the person has submitted.
