problems accesing sites? help
 

Hey
I got a sponsor, where I can view most of their sites, but some sites I cant, i know they are up and running and everything, it is just my computer that fucks up i think..

as there is one paysite, i can access it, but they got some hosted galleries on a subdomain to that paysite, and those I cant access i just get a 404 error, and it is online..

I just cant figure out what the fuck is wrong with my computer, anybody that could know what is wrong?

maybe a little more detail would help diagnose whether it is a local issue, a network issue or an issue with the sponsor.

The basic thing to check would be to see if you are indeed getting to where you expect to be arriving. Its possible you're behind an invisible proxy from your ISP that may not be sending the header info to the hosted gallery server. Its also possible you have a toolbar which might be redirecting the domain. If you're getting a 404, and I can't imagine too many sponsors that don't have a pretty 404 page that contains advertising, I might suspect you aren't getting where you expect to arrive.

For the hosted galleries, if you use someone else's code, does the gallery show? Do some galleries work or do all galleries you try end up with a 404?

That will say that the site is down if it gets a 404 or any other error. Any successful hit will say that the site is up.

This is the only thing I havent checked, is there a way to test it or go trough it?

Well, based on the IP address you're posting from, and the location you have listed in your profile, if your profile is indeed correct, you are using a proxy server to access the net. You should be able to check your network settings to see if you have a proxy configured. If you don't, its possible that your ISP is redirecting you through a proxy in england in which case you might not be able to make the change.

Alternatively, you could have some malware redirecting you through England, or, perhaps intercepting your requests to the hosted galleries.

As far as I can see i dont have any proxies set up, as this problem is both in IE and firefox also..

and actually my profile dosnt tel the truth i am in the UK right now.. :)

Is it 404 or No DNS?

If you're getting a 404 & others are getting a page, it might be that the DNS has not propagated after a server move.

Just the standard IE 404 page:
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

and I have had this problem for at least a few weeks now :( it is the same thing with firefox, so cant be a IE problem

That's not a 404 page - that's a No DNS error.

A 404 page is a "page not found" message that is generated by the domain.

You've actually provided very little information which makes it difficult to troubleshoot. You've not listed any urls so that other people might be able to run some tests. So, at this point, I don't think anyone on the board will really be able to do much more than point you in the direction to fix the problem yourself.

First, make sure you don't have any malware/spyware on your machine. If you have a router, connect without using the router. Make sure your settings match what your ISP says they should be. You mention it does it on IE and Firefox, which means it might not be an issue with IE specifically, but, there is malware that will infect the hosts file or could have changed your TCP/IP properties. It could be further upstream if you use a router that has a content filter.

Then, approach the sponsor, tell them the difficulties you're having and have them work through some troubleshooting with you. At some point, they're going to find out if it is a dns issue or a connectivity issue based on whether some tests work and some don't. For example, if you cannot get the dns to resolve, but, can hit the IP address that the hosted galleries are hosted on, then the dns issue needs to be resolved. Perhaps you need to try opendns, perhaps you have malware, perhaps your ISP has blocked that IP for some reason, perhaps your router/firewall is blocking the domain name because of some filter or doing some content filtering.

Once you've gotten the issue hammered down to a few alternatives, if its not a sponsor issue, then, you have the Internet Provider's technical support to head to. You give them the information, they run some diagnostics, checks, etc to find out whether the issue is on their side or your side.

If its determined to be on your side, then, you run your spyware/malware scans, check the connection settings with your machine to make sure they match what your ISP claims they should be.

At some point in that process it should fix it.
