I just found 240.00 bucks

I just found 240.00 of my OWN money. The problem? Its a check, from the year 2000.

Seems my book keeping is so bad, that I actually FILED a CHECK instead of a CHECK STUB. What a fucking nightmare.

So when going through papers and the like, guess what I found. That's right. 240.00 just sitting there.

of course, you may know, I'm packing to move into a new place. A quarter G would be a nice bit of pocket change to help with the move so, frankly, I sure hope it can be honored.

I contacted the people who wrote it, in the hopes that they'll be able to honor it still. I'm really hoping they will. If not, I'll frame it and put it on the wall as a kind of salute to how stupid I can be.

The point though, is ... I payed taxes on this money. Its been sitting there, not drawing interest, not buying me something nice to have. just sitting there, fading.

Dont let this happen to you! Keep good books. Keep good information and make SURE to cash ALL of your checks ;)

I cant believe I did this, i cant even believe I'm admitting to it, but there it is all the same :)

If someone can learn from my mistakes, then... lol :p go for it.

I've got all these 20 dollar checks that I've just been too lazy to go to the bank with. |goodnight

Misty Kristy 2004-02-16 03:01 AM

I keep all of my checks in a drawer, everytime I make a run to the bank I grab them all and fill out a quick deposit slip for them. The trick to not forgetting about checks is to keep them organized :)

Surfn 2004-02-16 03:58 AM

I take checks to the bank once a month...sometimes two months. The bank staff are really polite to me. I wonder if it's the amount of my deposits? lol

stuveltje 2004-02-16 05:32 AM

Does remind me of one check i ever recived 9$...........i never cashed it.....reason..........9$ will be in mine money the euro about 7 euros, then if i have to cash the check i have to pay the bank 7.95 euro cost!!! so i have to pay 0.95 euro cent and receive nothing.......nice, and i still dont know where it came from this was about 2 years ago.|waves|

just cash it with a whole bunch of other checks? over here we only pay a fee per deposit (which can be multiple checks), not per single check.
so what i do is keep all my checks untill i have a decent amount (be careful not to let them expire though)

stuveltje 2004-02-16 07:33 AM

Cant in holland i pay per check....... veryyyyyyy greedy banks here |lightsabe

Greenguy 2004-02-16 07:49 AM

Boogie - that sucks :(

I shredd all my stubs once I have them logged into my MS Money but I did once keep the stub & shredd the check - LOL - it was a check from CE & I told them what I did & they cut me a new check the next time around :)

finnbear 2004-02-16 07:58 AM

When check arrives, I wrote all info from it in my yearly check book. Who sent it, check no. and of course $ amount. That way I can ask for a new one if anything bad happens.

Then I put that check in check box. That's an ordinary small cardboard box in my table. Every month's last day I sign them, put them on envelope and send to my bank.

I must pay 11 euros per check. Our banks are creedier than in Holland.

Mental Ernie AKA Hotlinker 2004-02-16 08:19 AM

With the dollar being this low in value compared to the euro and having to pay a fee for every check, how is this still profitable for you?
I know that if I had to do that it just wouldn't be worth it anymore. Of course, unlike you guys, my checks are of small amounts. That might have something to do with it.

Dr Bizzaro 2004-02-16 08:53 AM

Usually checks are only good up to like 90 days. The company would have to reissue you another one. It's doubtful that they would, but if they do, it's a standup company.

I go to the bank to make deposits at least 3 times a month. You never know when a company is going to go under and stop payments on a check. You can't be too carefull.

Plus, my deposit tickets only has space for like 30 checks, so if I don't go I would have to make multiple deposits at once. And the bank just loved to tack on additional business charges.
-Charge per deposit transaction
-Charge per check deposited
-Charge for Check written
-Charge for this
-Charge for that

I hate banks. If only my matress had a checking system.

I've been burned too many times.

Ramster 2004-02-16 12:39 PM

When I get my checks they go in my wallet basically right away. I go to the bank usually once a week because I do get a weekly ccbill check to along with others.

Burned is right but I was lucky to Not deposit my Globil Checks I had.

dablond 2004-02-16 01:45 PM

money

Wow that's great. Sure hope they honor it. Good Luck!|waves|

Boogie 2004-02-16 03:38 PM

Well, I contacted the sponsor... its probably one of the most reliable ones out there... and I think there is a good chance they will.

Though even if they dont, Its my fault not theirs. They're great folks, and I know they'll do whatever they can.

The point is not to press on any sponsor programs I use, but to point out that you gotta be careful with these kinds of things. 240 bucks isnt a lot of money to most of us here at all (especially for me in 2000) but its the principal of the thing. What kind of person am I if i throw away 240.00 bucks? That's a shitload of money back where I grew up, 240.00 bucks is a lot of money, even if it doesnt seem like it to those of us who read this board ;)

Hi Mental Ernie. Are you sure about that fee per deposit?
I pay a minimum of 15 euro per check at the ING bank, even if I deposit several checks. And it is also independent of the amount of the check. And that's exclusive VAT.
I'm trying to use eP as much as possible.

Hey Stuveltje, if Holland is bad.....Sweden is nightmare......

Yup. When I first started cashing checks the cashier asked me if I wanted them all deposited at once. They add up the amount of the checks, recalculate it into euros and than substract 15 € (that is a fixed amount indeed) from it. I'm with Fortis bank.
I don't pay taxes on it as I don't report my porn incomes yet, don't make enough to give another 30% or something to taxes.

What is eP (e passport I assume) btw? And how does it lower your costs for cashing checks?

if you attached your bank act to your paypal act, your bank can see all your paypal activity? or just the ones where you deposit money from paypal into bank? enlighten me please ...

Nickname 2004-02-17 06:45 AM

Mental ernie, the bank can only see when you deposit into your bank acount.

on epassporte, you get your own visa ATM card so no need to transfer it, just take it out :)hehe

abe 2004-02-17 06:45 AM

Mental Ernie. It's not completely exact, but you could say that eP (ePassporte indeed) is like a Visa on which you can also put money. You can find more info here: https://www.epassporte.com/
Tou can use it with and without a physical electronic card. You can buy stuff with it on many places (not everywhere) on the internet and in shops that accept Visa. When you have an physical card you can also withdraw money at many ATM's. Just like with a Visa card.
If my memory is good then the yearly fee for an electronic card is 35$. And when you withdraw money then you pay 2.5$ per transaction (and I think per 250 euro, but I'm not sure about this).
Anywat, eP is cheaper then a bank. And there are already many sponsors who also can pay you via eP. I think eP is the best solution in many countries in Europe. To give an example. This afternoon I will take a few checks for a total sum of 1,000$ to the bank. Well, I will get around 500 euro for it. But I will inform at Fortis. This could be a non neglectible difference.
I hope the elections in the US change something positive on the exchange rate of the $ :)

BML 2004-02-17 07:38 AM

I just got one from some penis enlargement sponsor thingy....

$ 5,50.... |bananna|

In euroland it´s like - 1,50 after the bank take their share
