Google pays tribute to the LHC

Not sure how long they will leave it up so I've also included the image with this post.

Kewl graphic, the end of the world?
|
Yes it ended yesterday when it was turned on.
|
Very sweet - google does a lot of things well, and I'd put this celebration of physics on the list.
Cross the beams! |

I love it when morons argue for things they know nothing about (referring to black hole end of the world theories) |
I did notice that yesterday it got dark a few minutes earlier than the day before.

The only thing that sucks about using the iGoogle homepage is that you never see the changes they make on the regular homepage :(

I think they've only done the first proton beam tests so far. Basically just seeing if they can get the beam to circulate the way they want, first counterclockwise and then reversing direction and then reversing back again to be sure it does what they want/expect. Probably the only thing that could be hurt during the test with a limited number of protons are the walls lining the beam path since the magnets need to be adjusted perfectly during these tests (and one of the reasons they're doing these first).
I think the first collisions will be sometime next month. So there's still a little time before the world ends. Not a lot. But a little. :D |
Has the big bang machine destroyed the world yet?

That domain is going to be worth a fortune if it does destroy the earth.

google always comes up with best off the stuffs. this was an example!

Oh, and many congratulations to europe for hosting and spearheading such a revolutionary experiment!
Good job EU! Good job France and Switzerland! |

If this thing was built in the US it would be hip deep with evangelical nutjobs and antiscience scairdycats for kilometers around. So it's a scientific coup for Europe, no matter who else contributed. It will be remembered that these discoveries were made in europe. The educated people of the planet are all waiting happily for the first results. What they've learned about managing large scale superconducters is already worth trillions, and it's just waiting to be applied in the superconducting electrical grids we will hopefully be building this century. |
