Hypothetical Question

And it actually is hypothetical!

Say you were given £250 (say $500) to spend on getting good traffic onto your sites, what would you do with it?

Paid banner campaign?
Pay for SEO?
Pay to get one way hardlinks?
Buy £250 quids worth of ale and hope the gods bless you with the answer?

I ask because the amount isn't enough to get in a campaign with "the big boys" but it is enough that you wouldn't want to piss it away on a random test.

In my opinion I wouldn't go with a paid banner campaign or SEO, the possibility of little to no return is too high.

I'd go with a hardlink or targeted, niche clicked traffic.

I think that is how I would be leaning myself.

I always wondered why someone would sell good traffic and not just use it on a cash converting project of their own.

From what I know about selling traffic, the seller figures what he/she can make on the traffic if he/she used it for their own purposes. Then they add at least 10% and sell it to you. This means you have to be at least 10% more effective that they would have been or you loose money.

Just my 2 cents.

It would depend though, perhaps the site selling and the site buying have two different objectives. I wouldn't have said it would be as clear cut as needing to be as efficient as the overheads they put on.

To one person 1000 uniques could mean one sale, to another it could mean 3 email addresses, to another it could mean a forum poster and so on.

Given the choices, I'd be headed to the pub. Left to my own devices I'd probably buy as many pre-built freesites as possible and use them to expand my existing network of sites.

How about a few trips to the pub? I'm my own best traffic generator. Some good down time keeps the juices flowing during up time.

I had that on my previous post - then deleted it. That's one of the ways I built my traffic to where it is now.

I'd suggest tossing maybe $100 at PPC for your best converting site, and hope you found a winner.

Costs can be high, but, the rewards can be good.

I'd create pages or small sites to use Yahoo and Google PPC traffic on.

That's me though.

Does anyone have any experience using Google Adwords for clean free sites?

Easy answer: you get the money upfront and let other fools gamble on commissions, shaving, site closures, etc, etc, etc. All traffic is golden and all traffic is shit.

Tommy 2008-09-21 10:23 PM

well ... knowing what I know....I would buy the top spot in a categorys at Tommys for a entire month ... for that money you could even get 2 categorys for a month

If I had an unbudgeted $500 laying around, gathering dust, I'd order 25 sweet free sites from CrazySy and see if he'd throw in a one-page hub for another $100, linking to all those free sites. I'd mostly likely choose a niche that I wouldn't normally work myself and park it all on its own niche-specific domain.
