Tricking about recips

Today I got this freesite from this guy "hincapie". It called my attention that my recip was next to the "big ones" (he has never done that before) so I took a look at one of the link lists featured there and I found this site.

In case the sites go 404 (or your too lazy to click on the links): he sent me a mirror with the recip of my site along with the big link lists, but the mirror he sent to these lists is another mirror WITHOUT my recip.

I've seen that done before & I know there was some half-assed reason as to why webmasters do stuff like this, but I don't remember what it was.

They say it has something to do with tracking hits - a bogus reason as all decent hosts I've heard of can provide server stats anyway.

But we all know it's to get someone who's not paying attention to link to spam. |sad|

I ban people for doing that. It's fake recips.

MadCat 2008-10-07 04:50 AM

I've seen this a few times and still can't figure out why it's done except maybe to increase chances of getting listed at the site that's got the recip next to the 'big guys'. It's fake recips so avoid that shit like the plague :D

On the stat end of things as far as click tracking goes, not all webhosts offer referer logging in your stats, let alone aggregate it out by directory/page, the only way you can reliably do that is have some JS tracking going on but a lot of linklists will not accept any sites/galleries that have JS on them at all (although I think the rule first originated to prevent people from pulling dumb JS tricks).

I believe he's a member of the board... hincapie

(just in case you wanted to hear his reasoning )

I think a possible reason someone would do that is to make believe a webmaster that his site is gonna get some nice traffic from the big link lists (when the reality is he's not gonna get anything because the recips are fake).

I emailed the guy right after I found out the other mirror but I haven't heard anything from him yet.

exactly.

I have a rejection reason for that - 'duplicate recips on doorway page'. I don't ban for it unless it continues, but it ticks me off.

That name and his icq number (96128702) seems to be associated with the webmaster for the CrankyCash program too. Damn shame if this is true since I was about to start promoting some of their sites (if the rss feeds were good anyway). But if he'd cheat you on traffic, Annie, then I sure won't be trusting him/them with any of our traffic.

Hey, yeah its me. Im to blame for that one.

Its not as malicious as its been made out to be - I was toying with a tool to reproduce recips - based on my database of sites I submit to. And the big ones were then together on top of the database - and accidentally, your site was alone at the bottom & thus the script started from the beginning again and filled in the 8 blanks.

Stupid mistake, specially that i didnt notice - and I do apologize.

Whenever I see tag I automatically ban the domain.
As far as I remember they are generated by chameleon autosubmitter/software
