A Question about Free Sites of Today
 

Things seem to have changed... Before i was just starting to mess with free sites (back in 00 and 01) and it was easy, index.html had a bunch of recips, then 01.html was a mirror of index.html which reciped to a new set of LLs. I have recently read that practice is no longer allowed? Is that true? How do you all get around that? Certainly having 50 recips on one index page would be considered horribly ugly. Thanks for all your help.

I think he was referring to the free sites that you submit to link list. link-o-rama is a linklist.
alot of the LL's like index pages rather than 01.html....20.html

No,it's not true.Of course most of the big boy's will require that their recip is placed on the original index,it's still perfectly alright to make as many mirrors as you need to get your site out there.

If you use text recips instead of buttons you can fit quite a few recips on a page without looking ugly, 50 is too much though..

This is definitely the way to go.

just a quick question if anyone knows, as google does't like mirror content how does this practice affect your search indexing?

Well if you do something that google specifically said they don't like,I would have to say it would have a negative impact on your search indexing...don't ya think? :)

I think it's a case where you gotta take the good with the bad.You might drop a bit with google but your able to get your site on way more link lists as a result.

Maybe I sound ignorant for saying this but I try to do what I gotta do to get immediate traffic,make sales and churn out a quality product first and worry about kissing google ass second.

I'm not worried about duplicating gallery pages or even main pages so you might make a few wording changes on your mirrors' index pages. I don't know how much change is necessary but a few words here and there would still be a change an only take a few minutes. (I don't do this because I'm lazy but a few minutes and you have different index pages)

i agree if you wanna make several mirrors pages, change the text on them

Where would the images and or movies be stored?
ie mydomain/freesite/mo/index.html in the mo folder?
so the whole site would need be repeated 3 times for 60 links

The most I've use with text links is 20 but but you could probably use more if you made it look good enough.

What wording changes should be made on the index? I'm guessing title, keywords, and of course the recips.

As a free site builder, you need to decide who is going to give you more/better traffic over the life of your free sites, search engines or link lists. That will help you decide how to do your mirrors. If you think that your free sites will compete well enough in search engines against millions of other pages, then go ahead and put the effort into morphing your mirrors. If you think that your free sites aren't unique/fabulous enough to rank well in search engines, don't bother making changes in each mirror.

I use a strict setup:

/dom/freesites/YY/MM/free_site_name/images
/dom/freesites/YY/MM/free_site_name/images/thumb
/dom/freesites/YY/MM/free_site_name/images/full

/dom/freesites/YY/MM/free_site_name/m0/index.html
/dom/freesites/YY/MM/free_site_name/m1/index.html

both indexes just link to the images absolute URL example:

http://dom/freesites/YY/MM/free_site...ll/image01.jpg

and this URL is used in both mirrors. This prevents me from having to copy the images for every mirror.

for SEO, and clean sites, I modify the URL's on a sub-domain based address:

http://dom/freesites/YY/MM/free_site...ll/image01.jpg

is the same as:

http://free_site_name.dom/freesites/...ll/image01.jpg

this changes the URL for seo reasons preventing duplicates, I can then link this site twice.

I use Xenus link slueth to check links, and build site URL maps, then upload them to my domain and use google's webmaster tools to read the map, this will tell me what it does and does not like. duplicate titles, duplicate URL's, invalid paths, 404's whatever it may find.

I was using mirrors but something happened to the searchengine traffic.
I think when i am linked to the 20big freesites that list me plus the searchengine traffic it is more worthwhile then chasing traffic from mirrors.
I supose with big ip upload plans and plenty of room on my servers I could build the same site 4 or 5 times(diferent names and changes in text) to try and cater for everylinklists whim

ONe thing I have noticed is that they allow more recips on the page than they used to.
