W9 Form

Can anyone explain why some sites want a W9 while others don't?

In the US it is used to prepare 1099's in order to report income so that it gets reported to the IRS. If a payor does not have one on file, they could be liable for taxes on income earned by their affiliates.

I was told it makes you responsible for paying the taxes on the money you earn with each sponser, but only if you make over $600 with that sponser.

Even if it's under $600 per sponsor you still have to claim it as income, but they're not required to send you and the IRS a 1099.

Technically, I should be getting dozens of 1099's every year. But the most I've ever rec'd were three. I just track my income on a spreadsheet as the checks arrive, then double check that at the end of the year vs. the check stubs and sponsor admin.
