iPhones surge to 69% of mobile web use in US

From a report released today.

On a side note I've noticed that Google Analytics breaks down iPhone traffic.

69% of 1%.

Not worth the effort yet.

Of course, nothing earns SEO cred like being one of the first in a category and existing on Google's database as a long term link. (And that is great if Google becomes the search engine of choice for the delivery of porn to mobiles.)

I have been eyeing the iPhone and other mobile browsers for a while, wondering when a platform would define the standard for the market.

Maybe the iPhone is showing itself to be that new standard that everyone starts to design for. The AT&T 3G wireless network (the iPhone standard network in the USA) is speedy. It's more than capable of serving pics and video.

Thanks for the info, Cleo.

From CNN
Quote:

Some caveats are in order. This is just one company’s view of the mobile Web — albeit the view of world’s largest supplier of mobile ads, serving 6.3 billion banner and text ads per month. And it’s only a snapshot of the smartphones on the U.S. portion of the AdMob network — although 47.6% of AdMob’s traffic comes from the U.S. and 37.3% of that comes from smartphones.

I know I hardly ever surf the mobile specific (where those ads are served) websites, but 90% of my browsing is in a regular browser (seeing the same pages as my computers), and I am sure most non iphone web surfers don't use the mobile specific webpages either

So I guess it is true that an advertiser that TARGETS iphone browsing habits would see a huge majority of iphone hits :)

Hell, iphones are not that huge a majority of web enabled phones that ATT sells....lol

If iphones are 10.8% of all web enabled phones sold in the USA (the third largest share), it is unlikely that the 89% NON iphones sold in the US are being reported by AdMob

True, that.

I am just thinking about the future of porn delivery and how to plan for it. And I am coming at it from a demographical standpoint of a huge consumer of online porn, the business traveler.

I was a road warrior on and off over the last twenty years and have spent plenty of time on project ranging from a day to six months at a time away from home.

The Business Traveler falls into three specific niches in my experience:

1. The Newbie - Will blow all the extra money he is making from being on the road at the bar, strip club and escort services. He doesn't travel enough to consume enough porn on the road to be targeted.

2. The Regularly Travelling Joe - Spends enough time on the road that he is smart enough to avoid the strip clubs and to drink at a regular bar. He is likely to have a small to medium size porn stash on his laptop. If his laptop is not closely monitored, he is likely a regular cruiser of Link Lists, TGPs, etc and probably has a paysite membership or belongs to a pay-per-play type adult site.

3. The Road Warrior - Spends the majority of his days on the road. Has survived the Newbie and Regular Joe phases and spends his off time in his hotel watching TV, playing video games and surfing porn. This person will not only have a medium to large sized porn stash, he will likely own at at least two paysite memberships. Some guys spend hundreds a month to keep themselves jerking off and sane while living in an endless procession of hotel rooms. That travelling porn stash/net link is more a piece of home to them then the hotel towels.

The Joe and Warrior have three problems:

1. Where to stash the porn I already have?
2. How to access more porn when on the road?
3. How do I keep my taste in (fill in embarrassing fetish) private?

Stashing in the company laptop is risky. Stashing to a private hard drive works, but most guys are too lazy or technical inept to bother. In the end, the company IT guys are gonna know if the guy likes pantyhosed trannys if he uses the company machine.

Accessing more porn sounds easy, with every hotel offering 'free high speed internet'. Well...TANSTAAFL.

If you read through their "Free Internet" TOS, you discover that most hotels that offer this service reserve the right to any information gathered while you surf.

Now, I am not paranoid about 'The Man' watching me, but I have spent plenty of time fighting proxy wars with hotel "free internet" crashing php applications because they cached and then rebroadcasted each page I surfed. One hotel was so bad that it would not let me directly enter a URL address. I had to enter it on a continuously present browser frame (annoying) that would then decide if I could visit the site (crazy annoying).

This "Free High Speed Internet" is also notoriously slow and prone to crashed video streams on Friday and Saturday nights when all the lonely, over-the-weekend Traveling Joes and Road Warriors are consuming porn to feel better.

A fast, standardized, mobile platform that both serves pics and videos (the Access part of the need) and has a huge storage capability (solving the Stash part of the need) that the IT group can never touch because it's your personal phone (solving the Privacy part of the need) might just become a porn delivering piece of technology that could rival a laptop.

Or not.

The system of choice among the longtime, successful Road Warriors I know is a personal laptop and a wireless-anywhere card. An expensive option and few people like flying with two laptops. Gaint Headache.

Will that system reign for the next five to ten years or will the mobile platforms evolve into the porn delivery portal of choice?

Porn changes. Yesterday's Titans are todays object lessons. The richest pornographer ten years from now might not care about Google SERPS and Credit Card processing.

Wow...I have run on here for a while. But identifying an unmet porn need and exploiting it is what porn capitalism is all about, isnt it?

OK, you convinced me. I bought teenage-sex.mobi for $2.50 and there's a gpl mobile them available, so wtf, I'll build a mobile porno blog.

Just in case you want to know, the godaddy code for the cheap domain name is:

Quote:

Code: 199BUYCOM
Discount: $1.99 domains at Godaddy.com for Buy.com customers. Coupon code 199BUYCOM
I think its only good for one use though. Or maybe one per day. I had to use a different code to get teenagershardcore.com cheap.

And no raggin on me for using godaddy.

InfoGuy 2009-07-01 02:29 AM

OK, but I'm going to rag on you for registering a .mobi. |crazy| If mobile browsers are able to render normal non-mobile pages for mobile viewing, there's really no reason for anyone to need the simplified pages required by .mobi standards.

|pokefun| .mobi

Cleo 2009-07-01 07:41 AM

I also don't get why you would want a .mobi domain but maybe I'm missing something.

Gausche 2009-07-02 12:42 PM

mobi's work just as well as other domains and there are still plenty of keywords available.

It's simple supply and demand. There's very little demand for .mobi, so there's plenty of keyword domains available.

Good point, but if you corner the market it could bring in good revenue.

This is why I'm always recommending that people use our Mobile stuff. The # of people with cells will keep growing and that will give you even more opportunities to make some $ from mobile traffic. I can have a whitelabel made for you, you can use our mobile redirect script. (.htaccess mobile redirect recently added)

I keep wondering why more people are not taking advantage of this.

Perhaps results would be different, if TopBucks staff actually responded to emails from webmasters. I sent an email to Lee on June 30 and did not get a reply.

Cleo, thank you for the article.. very interesting. If it can be of any interest to any of you, some of our partners are reporting that between 5-10% of their internet traffic is generated from mobile users. I would be interested in knowing if this is something you are also noticing in your traffic. Any takers?

According to Google Analytics.
It's just over 2% at my LL
Just over 5% on the domains I use for TGPing and free sites.
Under 1% on all my other domains.

Gausche 2009-07-10 01:43 AM

We are seeing more than 10% mobile traffic, a lot more in fact.
