What makes a hosting company suck?
I have noticed that there are alot of people recently either having huge hosting problems, or are actively looking for a new host.
I understand that economic reasons can make people look for a new host (they were paying too much before, as an example), but I think we can all benefit from these experiences. What makes a host suck? My first two: 1 - "host" is a reseller, only works monday to friday. 2 - support is done via ICQ / AIM / instant message things only. Anyone else? Alex |
If my server goes down and I can't reach anyone then they suck and it's time to move on.
|
I don't have a clue Alex, but I'll be watching this thread to find out. We've co-located or leased a line since we started in 98.
Our reason for changing our setup is purely economic, plus a little bit of "let someone else deal with it" so we can focus on business. SS |
The following are my pet peeves:
1.) Slow pipe 2.) Slow response to server trouble 3.) Inability to install things I need, to support some script or software, in a timely fashion 4.) Constantly tacking on new fees and charges that should be part of the hosing contract Fortunately I have been with a host for many years that does not fail me in these areas |roses| |bananna| |bananna| |bananna
If customer service and support isnt GREAT,
if performerance isnt GREAT, then the hosting company SUCK. But if they get back to you FAST and WITH quality, when it comes to your support issues, AND if the performance on the service you bought is GREAT, then they are a GREAT host. |peace
I've recently tried a new host for some other domains for about 3-4 months and had to move them to my regualr long standing host.
What did I run into? -Harddrive failure and someone not around 24/7 to fix it so I was down for 18 hours. -They took 2 days to get a cgi-bin to work properly So what makes a host suck? No 24/7 support and staff that cannot install everyday server needs. |
Let me count the ways...... |lightsabe
#1 - redirecting your domains because of a an unpaid $5.00 account !! #2 - putting SOMEONE ELSE'S pay site on YOUR dedicated server. #3 - Allowing bad practices by other people that get a whole C-class banned from Google. Poor or slow support is the big one tho.. |swear| DD |
3 things that make a webhost suck in my book.
1.) hours of downtime 2.) shitty/hard to reach tech support 3.) shitty bandwidth/isp backbone |
I have a question ..
Anyone here use RedHat on a busy server? If so, how is the performance? |
in addition to those already mentioned:
Not owning up to issues that are caused by them..blaming everyone/thing else no clear billing system.. |raygun
I gotta say my host kicks ass! i really got lucky cuz i was a real newbie when i signed up with them, and just had seen a few ads. the pipe is fast as hell, tech support is amazing 5am and i email get a response in 10 minutes. they have never gone down in 5 months that i have been with them. and if i have a problem with something i am not sure how to do i email and they do it for me in like an hour or less. i honestly owe them big! as a matter of fact i asked for a affiliate program cuz i want to re-sell them since i would be happy to do it, and they are making one. but anyway if you need a great host try adult host solutions ps no affiliate program yet and i don't work for them, i just put the link cuz i really do like the service and i owe them. |santa|
