lets say sponsors site is named
www.dirtyanalfucking.com and i would like to buy www.dirty-anal-fucking.com only to promote THEY site no other.

Plus that sponosor is around for some time and didnt buy it.

I mean are there any legal issues with that. ?

Most sponsors don't mind but I would check with them first.

Illegal, probably not, but it is unethical.

Keep in mind that in this business you are the sum of your reputation.

I guess if you are only promoting the sponsor it is ok, but as Jim said, ask first.

I was more thinking along the lines of people who buy domain names close to successful names in order to steal traffic.

Yes I would like to register it ONLY to promote their site , no traffic stealing - im not that kind of guy... even tham im a webmaster from Poland ;-)

I do the same, i bought http://www.vaginal-cumshot.com i promoot extreme vaginalcumshots on it, so there is a different i by a domain almost the same as the sponsor but i promoot that sponsor on it.

Going along with what everyone else has said - definitely ask the sponsor - some will allow it and actually might even help you with some special promotional content - others strictly forbid it (Playboy comes to mind on that one) :)
