Visa Puts Clamp on Cross Sales

A lot of sponsors aren't going to like this! |catfight|

And a quicky May 1 deadline also. |club|

Online companies will no longer be able to allow third parties to charge a customer's card without the card owner re-entering credit card information, Visa said Tuesday.

Visa says that such marketing can result in "high levels of consumer disputes and degrades the efficiency, reliability and security of the payment system." It said that 35 million consumers have paid $1.4 billion for such marketing offers.

Visa's new requirement is designed to send a "clear signal to cardholders that a second purchase is being initiated and protects them from questionable marketing practices," the company said in a statement.

This seems like a good thing although I'm sure that people will find a way around the new rule.

"third parties"...? I would like it better if it said "additional transaction". The times I've been ripped off, it's been the same party..they just pile on a bunch of extra services.

It's a start.

Recently I bought a XML creator and got dinged by a cross sale.

It was only 12 bucks but still.

This isn't a shock....we all knew this would be coming. Im surprised its only 3rd party's

Fuck em. It's cross-sales that are causing people not to want to spend money on buying memberships, so anything that will stop the customer from getting screwed over is good. If a sponsor tanks because of it, then double fuck em, they're running a flawed business plan.

Agreed!

Im not a fan of cross sales to begin with, so like others are saying fuck em.

MadCat 2010-04-28 11:04 AM

If we're going to be all like "fuck em"... can we at least get pictures and videos? I smell a new take on the whole 'girlfriend revenge' sites coming up...

:D

xsales are not inherently bad... just hidden ones, a lot of people would like fries with their order or to know that an upgrade is available or an aftermarket part will enhance performance or whatever.

xsales in adult just have a horrible rep for the fact that so many did them unethically.

MadCat 2010-04-28 10:17 PM

Far-L: Point, but currently even "non-hidden" xsales are screwing the user, because most often the little checkbox is already ticked, and hidden somewhere on the join page where it's not entirely obvious what it is for.

Most sponsors that I've found these days have some sort of xsales going on, and the majority of those do it in a pretty underhanded way; such as having a checkbox for a "get access to XYZ for $1.99*" - and the little * note is buried at the bottom of the page in 7pt font going "valid for 3 days, rebills at $39.99 monthly unless cancelled".

You know, if it would say "valid for 3 days, will not rebill' - sure. That's better.

Ramster 2010-04-29 10:20 AM

I agree with Far-L that legitimate cross sells aren't the problem. But as MatCat said 80-90% (likely) are not legit, they are hidden and screw the surfer. Then you have the ones with 2-3 cross sells, now that's fucked.

I did a test join on a cross sell site that was using epoch and I got 2 emails. One from the site I joined and one from the cross sell site, each with cancel links and info that the trial was 3 days.

If all cross sells worked like that we'd all be fine but they do not. Hence, time to get rid of them!

I think Visa did a good thing here and I'm pretty sure the other card companies will do exactly the same in the near future. Anything that instills faith back into the buyers has to be a good thing IMO.
