Window's Media Player Help

I've been havng problems with WMP as far as playing mpg's goes. 9 out of 10 times instead of playing the movie, it starts of the "ambiance" screen & then crashes. I have it set to be the default player for mpgs & this seemed to start happening after I installed WinAmp - and I have WinAmpo set for Audio Only :(

It tells me the problem is this:
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/Response.asp?SID=615
& that I need this "MainConcept MPEG Encoder 1.3.1 for Windows" - but that doesn't exist on the site & the new one costs money.

Anmyone have this problem before?

Help! :)

I knew I'd regret not putting in the "Cleo does not need to reply" comment on my post :D

Jim 2004-03-17 04:03 PM

Uninstall it and reinstall it :)

Ramster 2004-03-17 04:19 PM

LOL at Cleo. I downloaded Quicktime a while ago and my movies play fine now.

Find something other than WinAmp for your audio.

Greenguy 2004-03-17 04:28 PM

I did the uninstall/reinstall - no luck :(

Surfn - I need WinAmp for the radio shows :(

Surfn 2004-03-17 04:31 PM

I don't use WinAmp or WMP for the shows. WinAmp sets up to many conflicts with WMP. I've never known anyone who tried to use both that didn't have constant problems. |sad|

Greenguy 2004-03-17 04:40 PM

I'd shitcan WinAmp if I didn't need it to broadcast the shows :)

thrillho 2004-03-19 12:26 AM

Do you have Irfanview? If you've downloaded the full plug-ins file, it'll play your mpegs, and every other video and audio type I've ever heard of. And even more that I haven't.

Greenguy 2004-03-19 09:18 AM

Is Irfanview part of WMP?

thrillho 2004-03-19 09:56 AM

http://www.irfanview.com/

Download the plug-in pack (it's all free) and it plays/displays just about everything.

Alphawolf 2004-03-19 12:32 PM

Hmm. Search google for codecs.

Did you delete any by mistake? It doesn't say 'looking for codec' when you start an MPG, just shows the ambiance screen right away?

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&i...odec+downloads

venturi 2004-03-19 09:15 PM

Just disable the .wmp extension from your WinAmp file associations and make sure that Windows Media Player does associate itself with them. Should clear up the problems.

Greenguy 2004-03-19 09:23 PM

Alphawolf - I'm gonna do some hunting around for the codec's - the one they suggested is $150 :(

venturi - wmv files plys fine, it's mpgs that are fucked :(

amber438 2004-03-23 05:03 AM

go to a newsgroup and download it
alt.binaries.multimedia.utilities has it

Alphawolf 2004-03-23 01:11 PM

Did you ever fix it, greenie?

Greenguy 2004-03-23 02:47 PM

Fuck no :(

I tried to go to the news group, but my ISP must not like that one as it's not on the list :(

1/2 the sites I find that do have the codec wants to charge me for it, but it seems stupid to pay for it since it was working.

The other 1/2 are in some other language - LOL

I'm still looking :)

Alphawolf 2004-03-23 02:54 PM

Use bablefish to navigate the sites in other languages.

Opti 2004-03-25 04:54 PM

I had the same problem... not sure if it happened after winamp install.. but I tried everything before giving up and associating mpegs with real player :\

which sucks

Opti 2004-03-25 05:04 PM

you can view that NG here
http://alt.binaries.nl/viewgroup/?gr...edia.utilities

but i cant find anything that looks like the codec GG mentioned

Entreri 2004-03-25 08:42 PM

I use both WinAmp and WMP without any problems. I've installed a few "codecs packs" and my WMP plays about everything I feed it with.

Entreri.

p.s. You can try installing Microsoft's codecs :

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo.../WM9Codecs.exe

If you decide to try one of the many codec packs out there, some of them install spywares so you may have to clean up after installing them.

Greenguy 2004-03-25 08:54 PM

It's probably a moot point at this time - my hard drive crashed yesterday :(

Alphawolf 2004-03-25 10:16 PM

Did you have to do a full reinstall?

This may come in handy for peace of mind for the future:

http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/ptech/0....ap/index.html

Did the drive give any indication it was failing? You run scandisk once in a while?

Did you have the latest driver/firmware for the controller?

Regardles- it really sucks. Sorry man. :(
