After announcing Wednesday it would be laying off four percent of its workforce, Yahoo revealed today that it was terminating eight of its Web sites. Sites targeted for "sunsetting" are Delicious, AltaVista, MyBlogLOg, Yahoo Picks, Yahoo Buzz, and Yahoo Bookmarks.

News of the product cuts was leaked in the form of screenshot from an internal webcast aired by the company and posted to Twitter by Eric Marcoullier, the founder of MyBlogLog, the Wall Street Journal reported. MyBlogLog was purchased by Yahoo in 2007 and left to languish. Marcoullier is no longer with the company.

The leaked slide also identifies several Yahoo properties slated for merging. They include Fire Eagle, Yahoo Events, Yahoo People Search and Sideline.

Needless to say, Yahoo wasn't happy about news of its planned actions becoming part of the public domain. In a tweet to Marcoullier, the company's Chief Product Officer Blake Irving vowed vengeance would be swift for whomever leaked the slide. "Can't wait to find out how you got the web cast," he wrote. "Whoever it is, gone!"

After the beans were spilled about the cuts, Yahoo apparently felt compelled to comment on the record on the subject. "Part of our organizational streamlining involves cutting our investment in underperforming or off-strategy products to put better focus on our core strengths and fund new innovation in the next year and beyond," it said in a statement.

"We continuously evaluate and prioritize our portfolio of products and services, and do plan to shut down some products in the coming months such as Yahoo! Buzz, our Traffic APIs, and others," it continued. "We will communicate specific plans when appropriate."

This morning I just saw this.
Yahoo backs off killing Delicious.

I really hope that they don't kill off Delicious since I've built up a nice list there using AdThis and have a link to my list at the root of my LL.

Fuck, the founder sold it to Yahoo for a reported $30 million in 2005 and it took them less than 5 years to "throw it under the bus".

|crazy|

The big problem with Delicious is that they "no follow" all the links :(

Twitter & Facebook do the same - so far Stumble Upon is the one that does not do it.

The no follow is not necessarily a bad thing on a page like that. The page is all of your favorite sites. So build some inbound links to it. They do create a rss feed of your bookmarks for you. ;)

Remember when we all optimised for AltaVista? I have a vaguely sad feeling that they're canning it.

Grandma I freaking loved AltaVista! |thumb
Yahoo was wanting you to jump through hoops, google was a gleam in some nerds eye, and Altavista listed you in a decent spot within a couple of days. And delivered the traffic.
I'm getting all freaking misty eyed.

Yeah, I remember having top spot for some search terms... made some of my first sales thanks to AltaVista. Although I do remember that they changed the algorithm, I lost my rankings and thought... hmmm, I might try and get into this Google thing.

At one time I had terms that I had 9 out of the top 10 of the spots were mine. Those were the days on Alta Vista. *sigh*
