Can you tell me, how can the link-sites be promoted?
Many times I saw such sites with the traffic of 50,000-100,000+ visitors per day. How is it possible?

If you were to look at an established link list's referrer stats, you'd probably see.....

1) Bookmarkers
2) Link exchanges with other link lists/tgps.
3) Google traffic and other search engines.
4) A few hits from reciprocal links.

IMO the average link list will get about 1000-2000 uniques a day.

The long established link lists will get a whole lot more.

The sheer weight of backward links to the "big boys" will help them attain a load of search engine traffic. They will also get a mountain of traffic from TGPs.

Bookmarkers are probably the most valuable asset to a link list and the only way to get bookmarkers is to update regularly, which means getting a lot of submits.

Urb hit the nail on the head - those 4 are the places I get all my traffic from.

I think when you design you linklist, make it nice and clean - avoid the temptation to make a bunch of blind links or FPA and make something the surfer is going to want to come back to.

And unless you're GG or Tommy, having a "Theme" is helpful too....

You see, all 4 items are present in my referrer stats, but the number of visitors is very small. Maybe it's because my site is new, maybe because I have not a lot of free sites in the catalogue (directory), only free e-mail sites. About the link exchange with the "big guys": they are not interested in little known sites, for example Greenguy or many large TGP sites.


Jay, I have not blind links or FPA on my site and to make surfer come back I made forum, news section, gallery but they seem to be not interested in it.

Daring Lord....I know that most LLs will give you a link..at least in their other LL category as long as you have real free sites listed in your categories....not your own sponsor sites, but sites that you link to (other peoples) and a good quantity in each cat...around 30 or so. If your LL only lists your own sites or links to free email signups no one will list or trade with you normally.

as far as the big guys not linking to you....I know lots of new LL owners that have been listed at GG's, Richards and loads of other big sites and they were small sites when they got listed....just have to remember that a LL is a directory of other peoples sites that they submit....with yours thrown in occasionally...the way you describe your site would be called a hub...

Let's not jump the gun here:

1 - you've never submitted daringlord.com to me that I can see
2 - you have no warning page
3 - your links all open in new windows

2 & 3 break the rules - this does not mean I am not interested in linking to "little known sites" it means that I'm not interested in linking to sites that don't follow my rules.

humph .. you caught me by surprise with the 3rd item. I always thought that was a personal preference on the part of the linklist owner, not a hard and fast 'rule'.

Our listed sites have always opened in a new window. We've never had a complaint. The surfers keep coming back and they keep on clicking on those site links. I know that I personally prefer a new window .. I can't stand clicking the back button over and over and over again.

Oh well, each to his own! Variety is what makes the world go around. :)

I have always had the "no links opening in new windows" rule - my slogan has always been "I only need one window to surf" & I figure that if you need 2 or more open, you're probably smart enough to do it yourself :)

Back when I fixed elevators I use to walk in to the wiz on my lunch hour and change the homepage's on the floor models computers
and of course add it in to the favorites menu also

I attribute that to my success

I too hate new windows when I dont ask for them... If I want to open something in a new window.. I will right click and do that...

Back buttons aint hard work.. and there are plenty of choices...

back button , ALT <- , backspace

It is also not to hard to give the surfer a choice.. with a little bit of extra code..:)

If I may interject 2 useless cents... I see so much good input on this topic in all aspects.

IMHO, be specific as you can and go as niche specific as you can.
10 targetted (niche specific) surfers are worth more than 1000 Joe Blow browsers.

And for new folks...
Listen to GG, Tommy, Mr. Mary Lou, Cleo, etc...
You won't be steered wrong.

Opening in new windows works better for scripted TGP trades.
