GoDaddy accused of interfering with anti-SOPA exodus

Quote:

An effort by GoDaddy customers to boycott the domain registrar over its support for Hollywood-backed copyright legislation has sparked allegations of foul play.

NameCheap, whose chief executive last week likened the Stop Online Piracy Act to "detonating a nuclear bomb" on the Internet, said today that GoDaddy has intentionally thrown up technical barriers to prevent its customers from leaving. GoDaddy lost over 70,000 domains last week.

I am not sure why GoDaddy got into this fight. While a lot people love GoDaddy, those who hate it, hate it a lot. I decided to use NameCheap a while back and have no complaints.

I used GoDaddy back in the day for a small personal site I was building so I ended up just sticking with them. Of course I ditched their shitty hosting, but I still have domains there. I might give NameCheap a look for future domains though.

But I agree with artwilliams about why they needed to be involved anyway.

I had 2 domains there. One I was able to transfer with no problems. The other had an incorrect address on it, so I made the changes & tried again. Then they tell me that I have to wait TWO months before I can transfer it due to the changes?????

I transferred over a dozen domains from GoDaddy to DirecNIC today. So far no issues. Didn't have anything to do with SOPA though. They were .info domains and DirecNIC was cheaper for renewing them. I still have four or five domains with GoDaddy but will probably transfer them too when it's time to renew.

Was that recent? I believe they used to do that quoting it was due to identity protection, but I think they stopped doing that since. Although I know if you register a new one there is a waiting period.

Two months though is bullshit because if you're domain is coming up for renewal within two months it basically fucks you into paying them for another year.

Nothing to do with domain transfers, but check out this article. Just shows how scummy and clever GoDaddy can be.

GoDaddy’s spammy link building techniques

Over the last few months, I've seen GoDaddy rise up in the rankings for a lot of hosting related terms. At first I suspected they were finally using their very strong domain in a smart way, but then I noticed they ranked for terms I know you can't rank for without a lot of external links, no matter how strong your domain. Let me tell you how I figured out that they got those external links by embedding links in their clients websites.

Nothing beats paying for hosting and a website builder while giving free links to the host. I tried their editor back in the day and thought it blew anyway. In fact their hosting blew as well and it seemed anything you wanted to install wouldn't function properly with their servers. I decided a while back if I wanted to ever grow any larger with any of my sites it would have to be without them.

That's a very shady thing and I sure am glad I don't host their anymore.

I looked into the address change issue and it seems they don't lock them anymore from transfer when you change the contact info. However new registrations are locked for 2 months. Is this common or only something they seem to do?

I have several domains registered through GD, never had any issues and find them to be more reliable than others I've been with. The renewal fee's are a tad high, but the discount codes usually help to chip it back a bit. It's easy to change your info and dns settings don't seem to have any issues either when changed. As far as the anchor text issues and logo promotion, if you're going to use a site builder through a service like that, buyer beware...

Sorry to comment in a slightly old thread, but I'd just like to mention:

I've had dozens of domains registered through namecheap (Simon recommended them to me some years back) and I've never had a problem, everything's been right and proper, Not even a minor glitch. =)
