Blogging

Just read a small piece about blogging increasing your traffic, didn't explain alot so my question is:

- What is it
- How do I use it
- Where can I learn more about it

thx

Linkster 2003-09-11 06:30 AM

Fonz....a blog (weblog) is just a little text site that people have started using to basically journal anything they like. It has alot of imbedded links and very easy to post to using either your own software or an online system like blogger
Recently Google bought blogger.com and added a tool to their new toolbar to allow you to make these sites very easily.

An example is the eros blog as you can see there is alot of text and links for Google and others to spider so they do very well in the rankings right now.

Google has hinted at adding a tab at the top of their search for blogs, just like the directory and news tabs.

StacyCat 2003-09-11 07:19 AM

though, I think google isnt ranking their bloggers as high as they used to. My blogger used to be the second search term for "StacyCat," now its not anywhere on the list.

Linkster 2003-09-11 07:41 AM

StacyCat...what's the url of the blog? seems kinda strange as Im seeing alot of blogs showing up - although I do agree that Google is probably getting them seperated out for the blog collection

StacyCat 2003-09-11 07:51 AM

mine is at stacycat.blogspot.com

I use it much more of a "this is my life" blogger than one thats business related :-)

This was just announced,

Search powerhouse Google Inc. has snapped up Pyra Labs, the company behind Web log site Blogger, giving it a boost in both Web content and services.

The acquisition, which was disclosed in a posting on the Blogger site over the weekend, will also allow Google to leapfrog into the burgeoning Web log market, which has been gaining steam recently as increasing numbers of Net users discover the ease of use and flexibility that the online publishing medium affords them.

what are some of the main advantages to using something like
Blogger.com as opposed to just doing html pages on your
domain name and maybe setting up the file path like:

(note these are non- existent url's used merely as an example here)

http://www.BellsDirectory.com/blog/
http://www.BellsDirectory.com/blog/Sept112003.html
http://www.BellsDirectory.com/blog/Sept102003.html
http://www.BellsDirectory.com/blog/Sept092003.html
http://www.BellsDirectory.com/blog/Sept082003.html

and hyperlinking select keywords throughout....

I know there must be advantages to using the actual
blogging services or software - they are becoming
so popular nowadays...

what features do you most enjoy ??

if you blog and don't want to post details here you can always eMail me...
I won't share your blog url if you don't want it known...
(eMail me HERE: evelyn937 @ Lycos DOT com )

are there any blogs that you like to try to visit daily or weekly ??

do affiliate programs consider mentioning their products or sites in a blog to be spamming ???

~Bell

Linkster 2003-09-11 06:10 PM

Bell...the main reason I use the blogger software..I can type a msg just like I do here on the board, including adding urls and formatting...click a button, and it publishes it in a template Ive made up, ftps it to my domain and Im done...in other words, I can worry about the text and not have to do any coding except for the initial template :)

outside of the typing the text part its about 5 seconds to get it up and published.

I know most peoples blogs Ive seen do some sort of affiliate advertising....from having a WMs page where they push referrals, to the actual ads on the template pages....cant see where any of it would be considered spam....someone still has to click a link to go to the site you're advertising...its done the same way as on this board or in a sig file :)

do they give you pre-made template choices
- or does one have to know how to make the
empty template themselves to start with ??

~Bell

Linkster 2003-09-11 08:08 PM

Bell..they have premade templates...really easy to edit to your tastes as well...most people that Ive talked to that set their own up took on average about an hour or two altogether to be up and running

EclectiXXX 2003-09-11 08:44 PM

After using blogger.com I've got to agree with Linkster... It's WAAAYYY easy ....

Here's mine!

Sex Dragons Links Main page with a BLOG integrated into it...

I am also messing with a PHP based blog system and I've got to say blogger.com is easier, quicker, and still does everything I need.

Linkster... I DO have a question though...

Was there no TOS or Acceptable Use guidelines on Blogger.com???

I couldn't find any...
|shake|

Linkster 2003-09-11 09:19 PM

EclectiXXX..Ive never seen a TOS...and with the types of blogs out there mirroring what Google will link to, I dont think there would be a heck of alot of restrictions :)

EclectiXXX 2003-09-11 09:36 PM

Well that's good... one look at my blog and you'll see it's not for kids...

xxxjay 2003-09-11 09:42 PM

You really should considder of decreasing your country redirects, there are alot of foreign countries that convert well on "US" sites, The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany are a few of these examples. By the way, the translations I get here are horrible :)
Didn't know that reading dutch was so hard |afro|

Wow, Cool!
I tried Blogger.com - and it works so well with the Google Toolbar button!

Since I use different computers at home and in the office, sometimes when I browse the web and I find a site that I want to bookmark, but it's work-related, I ICQ the url to my work computer.

With the blogger all I have to do is click the blog button on my browser and it will add the site site name and any text I have highlighted to my blog!

Very neat.

I see thousands of uses for this thing.
