Plan B for Markslinks - I need some input
Ok, Totalnic has the money - for 3 days now, without any response from them.
With my other work schedule I can't call them because of the time difference. Should I simply start over? I have marks-links.com and marks-xxx-links.com Just not sure what to do. btw- I haven't lost any links or anything.. just the domain mess. |
Don't start over - you'd loose all your traffic.
You can't change to a new registrar? |
I've had zero traffic to Mark's for 10 days already.
Eventually this should be resolved... Should I just wait out another week and see what happens? Was thinking, of just moving everything to a different URL and redirecting markslinks to the new domain. No matter what, this sucks. FYI - read the TOS of your registrar - If I would like to proceed with legal proceedings, it will have to be in Australia! |
Do Not give up. Eventually you'll get it back up and some of that traffic will return. Plus all the recips and link trades out there.
|
Dare - I'm with Greenie - change registrars quickly - it only takes a few minutes - if there is some reason you can't do that, I'd go in my server and set up a 301 redirect to one of your other domains - but I'd get those on a different registrar if they are with the same registrar
The 301 will allow the traffic and links to count for your new domain (I'm pretty sure - more experienced SE people please correct me if Im wrong) |
I would find a way of calling them with credit card in hand and then would move registers as soon as I hung up the phone.
|
I also don't think you give up on the original name just yet Dare.
You have years invested in that name, all your recips are based on it, you can recover it still despite this problem. |
I would have changed registrars as soon as the first problem arouse. There's no need to let a business steal your livelihood through their sheer negligence!
|
It seems like if you contacted another register like DirectNic and explained your problem they should be able to help to transfer your domain names to them for a fee.
Markslinks.com has been around for a very long time and is a golden domain. It is worth a lot, don't loose it. |
Dare,
I had similar probs a while back... Get your host to put marks-links.com or marks-xxx-links.com in place of markslinks.com and rebuild the same site. Get your major links swaps to change to the "new" domain When/If you get control of markslinks.com again... just point it back to the same place. You should get some traffic back and the SE's should pick up the new domain. Eg: marks-links.com marks-xxx-links.com markslinks.com should all be exactly the same site/IP Though not ideal it worked for me. DD |
After talking to Dare this afternoon - I think he's gone to the cabin for the weekend - the registrar won't change the DNS nameserver entry - right now they have it pointing at their own hosting Co. in Au, instead of his host.
DDave - totally agree that is the best path, after reading some articles about TotalNic and their responses to problems like this - if he does get it back, he can always 301 it to the new domain with no trouble I believe, with no dup domain issues since no one can bot him right now either |
Try transfering it to XXX (http://www.somebsdomain). It's $7.75 and if the transfer doesn't go through you won't get charged. You should at least give it a shot.
sig turned off for being oversized. Sig images can not be bigger then 120x60. [Edited - and the last thing Mark needs is domain registrar spam! - DD] |
And - he already has another registrar - a really good one that has tried to transfer the domain and totalNic refuses the transfer
|
tell me the companies address and I'll go throw a bomb in the joint.
seriously what company in australia? I've dealt with a few of them before, mainly on spam issues. regards garv |

damn their address shows as a US one. AH don't you hate companies like that.
|
Dave's plan definitely seems like the way to go, and has worked in the past for similar issues. And as Cleo says Markslinks has a good name and a lot of good link/link trades that you shouldnt let go.
It is times like these that I worry about the stigma that such an Australian Company put on us all. |

If you get back from bombing Totalnic in time... it looks like a "lunch" is going to happen next week if you are up for it.. ;-) and Dare... Monday happens here about 18 hours before you... I don't mind calling for you... or just post the number, who to ask for and what to ask them to do.... And maybe 20 or 30 different phone calls, all coming from within AU.. might give them the clue it's important they fix it Now :p |

thats the way i would do it |
A buddy of mine had a domain that was down for about 18 months. The day he got it back on-line he recieved over 300 hits. 300 may not seem like a lot but after 18 months!!!! You've only been down a few days.
|
Unless Dare has reason to believe that totalnic is going to screw with him, this could be resolved any day, even any hour now.
I mean, it's certainly a good idea to build another lnk list, especially one with a different text count on the pages, how could you lose? I'm not sure why DD and L are suggesting that Marks be recreated on another domain, but they must have good reason. |

Mirror the original site, and then if(when) the SE's find it it will be spidered and listed... more traffic. Get control of marlslinks.com again in 2 weeks time... and just drop it back over the top of marks-links.com and it will be an "equivalent" domain. Get the major trades changed back... and your done.. Traffic and maybe sales whild you dont have control of your major domain. DD |
its a long shot but since the registar. is fucked up can someone try and buy the domain and sell it back for the cost of it
