Hosting

Hi!

I really really need a new host.

Please give me some advice who to choose.
I need a managed dedicated server for about $200.
I would like cPanel and WHM.

I love things like "tell them I sent you!".

I belive in number of posts (right or wrong, I dont know..) so people with not so many post or hostingoffers in their sig WILL be ignored!

Please dont make this a spamthread! Please?

http://www.servermatrix.com/

They have some nice prices there.

Hello Thomas,

Would you define your expectations of a managed server?
What kind of server specifications did you have in mind?
How much bandwidth were you looking for?
What are you looking for in a new host that the old one is not providing?

Finally you might try doing a search here to gather some information on the various hosts that frequent the board.

Good luck with your search.|shake|

Servermatrix is unmanaged, they will not do these things for you, they will point you to the right direction tops.

LOL, I'm with ya there Thomas. I dont know jack about about any of those things either. And it seemed that most of the hosts i've been with in the past don't know either or just didn't care. :D

Fortunately i'm on a host now that actually gives a shit about me and my business and I would highly recommend that you check them out.

I know you are looking for a dedicated solution, so i would suggest emailing the system admin at
support@powerstorm.net

Take care Thomas, hope that helps in your search.

What the heck is up with you?? In EVERY post on I have seen you make you are knocking someone elses hosting. How the fuck do you know so much about everyone else???

Thomas,

I'm not a host, but I'm very happy with cyberwurx. They've got everything and the support is amazing. A lot of folks here use them.

Check out : http://www.cyberwurx.com/dedicated.html and tell them Kristian from fuk18 sent you :D

The first link in the drop down menu in my sig is for M3 Server. Been with them for many years and I'm very happy with them. They are fast to do anything that I ask and are great people to deal with. I have two dedicated boxes with them. They have dedicated boxes starting at $49 per month. :)

It's been my experience that those who claim to know everything, seldom do.

Quite the opposite, in fact.

They actually have some management plans.

gecko, just to clarify I have no connections with ServerMatrix, I just have a unmanaged server there and like their services (I don't know how good they manage a server upon request but for its price it's worth a look at their website).

Thanks Cleo. Looks good to me. Thats funny, the ones with simple homepages (and not templates that almost every hostingcompany has) seems to be the best....

What can you tell me about their cpanel? Easy enough?
Will try to get a hold of them to see a demo.

Hi Thomas,

Take a look at Cpanel/WHM ! |rasta|

Thomas 2004-05-25 06:15 PM

Are you sure that its that cPanel?

Hostingpeople use to shout out if its the "real" cPanel.

Like "FREE INCLUDED CPANEL 9/WHM

cPanel (the user panel) and Web Host Manager (aka WHM, the admin panel which usually comes with dedicated servers) is coded by Darkorb (cpanel.net). It's the most used panel at the moment, and the most preferred one (excluding free panels). Average going rate for a license is $20-30 per server.

They don't use cpanel, but I can add/remove domains, e-mail addresses, MySQL databases and all that stuff from the admin that they do give you. I run a lot of scripts and never had a problem if one of my scripts needed some sever support file installed that I've needed within 24 hours. Plus I've got both Analog and AWStats on my severs.

MMemmer 2004-05-25 10:50 PM

Hi Thomas,

Yes that certainly is the Cpanel/WHM. As to it being free, I don't think you will find it here for free, as it is a licensed product. If you are looking to do this we do have a couple of System Administrators on staff that are very good with Cpanel.

Altheon 2004-05-26 12:22 AM

You could get a dedicated server at an unmanaged place and hire a server admin. The cheapest I found was FastServerManagement.com at $30 a month and that is if your server is running CPanel. The CPanel license will usually run you $20/month.

Overall you must be very clear what "managed" means when you sign up. Ask what it includes. If it is just applying patches and updates, big woop since this is a completely automated anyway. Ones that include a certain amount of security i.e. kernel hardening, firewall, monitoring, penetration testing will cost you.

For doing web hosting research I like to use http://www.webhostingtalk.com .

Dreamhost is really good, I use them as a customer and I'm very happy with them.

Rodent 2004-05-26 03:14 AM

Cpanel a must? If its fully managed I dont see why you need it. Give a shout if its not needed and we can get a plan for you to fit your needs.

Thank you

Thank you

I would like to be able to add domains, create databases and so on on the fly.

I just dont know how to update, install firewalls and that kind of stuff.

I had cPanel once upon a time and thought it was very simple.
Thats why I would like cPanel.
