Using Dialers

This is a pretty newbie question for a guy who's been in the industry as long as I have, but we all travel in different circles I guess :)

I always see talk of using dialers, but I'm not entirely clear on what they are and how they work. In my own experience they're just spammy programs that try and auto-install when you go to the nastier regions of the Internet :) If anybody could give me some info I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Auto-install dialers suck, but some people do prefer to use them for whatever reasons (no credit card is probably the main one) I look at it as a nice way to make a few bucks off an alternative payment method :)

How does it work exactly? The user installs a program that dials out to like a 900 number and the company sends you a check once a month minus a percentage? What's the percentage? Do enough people choose to use the dialer that it's worth the hassle of setting up?

MikeC,

Dialers are like guns!

My own opinion - they SUCK|lightsabe

In the hands of an idiot - they are dangerous!

In the hands of a professional - they may have a valid use

If they didn't have the ability to take food off someone's table for a month as a result of a few hours surfing a pay site I'd gladly use them... but they do, so I don't... |lightsabe

Oh, so you have to stay dialed in while you browse, and then they charge you based on how much time you use? Do they force you to use the modem as your 'connection' or can you still use broadband? Now I'm just curious, it's definitely not something I would consider for my site.

There are ones for broadband users - dial x number with your telephone and your computer will be able to connect to the site - hang up and the session ends...

You can still choose between dialup connection or broadband...
the surfers who uses broadband gets a membership for 30 days for $39.99, same as with credit cards.

I have been using dialers very succesfully over the past years.

Autodialers suck for sure!!!

Auto-dialers SUCK.... YES, this is VERY true.

BUT... there are a lot of very reputable, trust-worth companies out there that use dialers as an alternative billing method, a positive thing for non-credit card holders.

While dialers are not as accepted here in the US as they are abroad, they are still used by many surfers. I wouldn't count out ANY option entirely. Look around - you'll find QUALITY companies that aren't out to screw the surfers OR the webmasters. When you find one, stick with it and you'll see the results over time.

The more options - the better. Fortunately today's webmaster has MANY choices when it comes to sponsors/money-making programs to choose from!
