My first free site (eep) very orange
 

Hi y'all. I've been lurking for a few weeks, and trying to learn as much as I can about what gets listed and what doesn't for free sites. The following is my first offering, and I'd say it's 90% done. I know I don't have the 2257 up, or the alt/meta optimizing done, but if anyone could possibly let me know about anything that might set off red flags, or abject ugliness, I'd really really really appreciate it. I look forward to getting my site in order to get accepted on as many of your kick ass link lists as possible. Thanks.

The last URL looks pretty good to me. One thing though, I would make the enter link at least as big as the sponsor link above it.

A couple of things you might want to check before submitting your site

You will want to put a warning on your index page. Most LL require it. As stated in GG's rules a site must have "a clear cut warning page without misleading "enter" links"

I recongize your content. So will many LL owners who see it everyday. Check this thread http://www.greenguysboard.com/board/...&threadid=2879

Yeah, I figured content from a package at Rock Bottom Content might be a little over used, but I figured that it would be better than sponsor content. :) Slightly. Maybe.

I'm just trying to get over the procrastination hump. I know that w/ my html ability, I should be able to cobble together a 4 page free site in 2 hours, but I've been procrastinating for the last month. I just want to get over the hump and get one submitted and get a little traffic going to play with. :) I wanna get it submitted by tomorrow evening. . . so we'll see.

Aside from the other advice given on here, you might want to tighten up the main page - you've got about 250 pixels of dead space on the top of & below the ad.

One of the pitfalls of designing on a monitor that's 800x600 :)

I tend to not mix %'s with hard coded sizes, but that's just me :)

Well, it's been up for almost 24 hours now, and most of the link lists I submitted to have listed it. I'm totally addicted to checking my stats and tweaking the ads used, especially since I'm using phpadsnew to rotate. Quite the eye opener now that I've actually got (a little) traffic to see which banners/textads get clicks, and which don't. I know it's just 24 hours worth of data, but after a few hundred adviews each, if ad "X" has a CTR of 6% and ad "Y" has a CTR of 0.34%, I'm going to direct the ad rotator to weigh ad X more heavily.

Course, no sales yet, but I've only had 60 or so clicks through to the sponsor. And I know from reading here and elsewhere not to really start judging till I have a few hundred clicks.

However, today really feels like a breakthrough. I finally crossed the barrier between planning/researching/dicking around and actually being an adult webmaster. Granted, I've got a grand total of 1 site, but theory vs practice = a very different beast. YAY. Keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for my first sale by the end of the month. Plans for tomorrow = Create a new free site. Find 9 more link lists for a mirror of the first site. Then submit yesterday's site to new 9 and new site to old and new for 18.

Oh, and check when the server updates my stats to see what the damage to bandwidth is. :) I've 64gig a month w/ $2 per gig for overage, so I'm going to try to get my traffic up to near that limit by September first. If I make 1 sale a month I should cover hosting costs (well, for any sponsor who pays more than 19.95 per sale, and most do, right?)

Sorry for the blithering, I'm just feeling really good, like I've overcome my first real speedbump |bananna| and I'm onto another part of the learning curve.

Medium term plan? 100 Link listable free sites by September 30th (that's roughly 100 days), in 10+ niches and covering 10+ sponsors. In addition 100 "in house" free sites with a few more sketchy tricks (like the odd console, more banners, and sponsor content used with impunity.)

I also want to get up at least 10 AVS sites with the more hardcore content.
