When buying domain names...

What do you think is best : hyphenated or non-hyphenated?

I tend to prefer buying both if I can. Say I bought sexlinks.com I'd also want sex-links.com.

What do you think? I suppose there are numberous factors to consider : type-in, se indexing, people fogetting to add the hyphen, etc.

Thanks :)

If you had bought it without the hyphens the domain squatters would have. |angry|

The reason I'm asking, apart from general curiosity, is I'm building some more local dating sites. I just wondered, since no one has the names I'm using, what's best to do :)

If it's going to be a link site or TGP where you want a shitload of surfers to come back OR you plan on advertising the site using a method other than links/banners (print, commercials, radio, etc) then get something that the person can easily remember, which means no hyphens, hard to spell words, etc.

If it's for normal site building, SE stuff & whatnot, then get everythign :)

That's what I wanted to know, thanks dude. Although now it looks like I've got about a dozen domains to get...sheeeet :)

I buy all my important domains both ways. Without for humans and with for spiders.

And, don't forget those plurals.

Alphawolf 2004-06-26 05:56 PM

Yeah.

Plurals. Hyphens. Incorrect spelling. Slight variations.

.com, .net, .org maybe even some of the offshoots like .ws and .tv

It adds up.

I suppose it depends how much you plan to promote it and build up that 'brand'. Peace of mind is worth registering a bunch, even if you know you'll only use one.
