How does traffic work?

Hi,
I have problem understanding the traffic sometimes.

For example, when i compare Tommys to Greenguys' link sites, i see the following as a surfer:

1) When a user enters Tommy's, he sees that he has a simple, easy to surf, categories are written bold and big link-list.

A surfer has the option to bookmark the site and keep checking out the free sites without too much navigation.

2) Greenguy has too much to offer, and i hardly put myself as a surfer when i enter his website. I can find the freesites easily, but i don't think it is that easy for a new surfer.

This is just a curiosity question...how do these guys make money off it and how are webmasters whose sites are posted money can make money off it?

From my perspective, if a surfer knows where to find free pics on a big link-list, then the freesite has to offer something very very unique which can't be found easily by any download utils such as Bearshare or Kazaa. For instance, one of my sponsors, Babes TV's movies are easily downloadable from Bearshare.

What do u guys think?

Think outside the box. Usually I believe when a surfer goes to a LL he is looking for something. Tommy GG and all LL owners job is to take the surfer where he/she wants to go. It maybee one of the LL owners pay links or free sites or a submitters free site. Once the surfer leaves a LL to a free site its that webmasters job to direct and filter out that surfer. Hope this helps.

Plus remember that not all surefers will enter a link list via the index page, a large majority of the traffic will come directly to a category after searching on an SE... or clicking a category link from another free site
