What is at the root of your domain?
Maybe we need A Fools board.
I check out what is at the root of a domain when I need to check out a webmaster who wants to trade traffic or get a partner account. I'm seeing stuff like this a lot. http://www.freebiesmut.com/ |
That's not good. People should at least put some sort of default page there. If I'm tight on time I'll throw up an FPA to a sponsor.

What really boggles me is that a lot of hosts don't have the default settings on a server to forbid directory browsing.
|
Always nice to browse someone else's server stats for new traffic sources. Also great way to avoid these nasty html pages with their ads and just go straight to the pics.
Yeah :) DirectoryIndex index.php index.shtml index.html index.htm |
at least the site navigation is simpler than alot of sites i visited |jester|

ill bet as a surfer thats like finding gold... i wonder what would happen if you made a page that looked like a domain index but was full of blind links ... now im thinkin all evil |jester|

It's idiotic to waste the root of your domain on directories. The smart webmaster tries to make money from every avenue possible. If I don't use a main page, I at least put up a FPA with some standard SEO techniques. :)

Mine has just a FPA.

Actually surprised that a snooper hasn't found the url and spammed it with enough traffic to close it down.
GG - you hotlinking yet??? LOL |
Did you at least give the guy a heads up?
|
That kind of a directory listing is just one more door for a hacker to get in. These people thrive on this sort of thing.
I agree with you guys, som esort of default page should be up at the very least. Drizzt |

Some...hell, most of you were probably not around back in the day when it was common practice to link to directories (before there were TGP's & Link Lists, we all just had sites/pages that linked to other sites/pages) I made a shitload of money by making fake directory pages full of blind links (anyone remember the "Index Of"?) Hell, I even linked to Jim's image directories back in the day :D Of course, this was well before I was involved with other webmasters (I spoke to about 4 people total online) and I would never, ever do it again :D |
I hate to think how many times I would have done that if my server didn't automatically 403 index.html. (Thanks, Mark!) Not so much on root, (although I do have one domain in that exact state right now; not naming names!) but on free site directories in general...getting much better lately, but man...we're talking three years of "learning" and I have a lot of cleaning up to do...

fyi for newbies and some of you on the bench.
Previous post was not meant to cause the webmaster undue bandwidth bills, and No, I won't be hotlinking anything. I haven't done that for over 3 or is it 4 years now. As GG said, back in the day, this was common, sort of an inside joke. I remember a chat room hotlinking an image of mine to the tune of 450k visits in about an hour. A simple htaccess redirect and 3 sign ups later, I had learned my lesson. Just a simple reminder to protect all your directories... I have a simple blind link index page I put in ALL folders just to make sure there is one there. |

Cheaters could be listed there too, etc... Something like 'Ignorant Corner'. It would be more helpful for newbies 'cos people would provide specific examples of what not to do. It seems that is sometimes a better way for people to learn. Just my .02 |
