Max height on Thumbs and images for free site

Does max height on thumbs of 160px and max height on full images of 600-640px sound about right?

Thumbs average out around 6k and images average around 50k.

BTW, I am using Easy Thumbnails and kept the JPEG quality at 80%.

Should I try 70%-75% if the image quaility of the original is very high to begin with?

thanks for bringing this up alpha...

i just a refresher on what a good thumb and image size should be... both vertical and horizontal thumbs

You just have to keep an eye on your page load times.

15 or 16 thumbs plus a banner or two may give you long load times if your thumbs are 6k each.

I do my thumbs usually at 125 pixels on the long side at quality 40% which allows me to use a larger odd banner. They are usually about 4K. I'm doing my large images at 640 pixels on the long side at quality 60%. They come in between 45k to 90k depending on the subject.

First I put the big pics on right folder. Then I made the thumbs. I also use Easy Thumbnails. After that I batch big pics. I usually use 600 for longer side, but if pics already are 600 something and too big, I use 550. For that I use Irfanview.

Wow. I'm sure glad I asked. I did a search here and came up with the above numbers.

What you do makes more sense to me. :)

Thanks, Cleo. |smooch|

IMO

140 max for thumbs - K size is not so imp.(but you cant have 400K thumbs:) yes I have seen this) good thumbs will save you bandwidth

Up to 800 for pics - as long as K size is reasonsable

Anything greater than 800 pixels long side or greater than 80 K would usually get rejected

Anything greater than 1000 pixels long side or greater than 100 K would definitely get rejected

That's a good point too. :)

I've been sorting through some zips of content. It's such a joy when people have the actual pics like 6 folders deep.

I vary my thumb sizes based on the template that I'm using, but for the most part, one side is around 100-125.

As for pics, I tend to go for 600x450 or 640x480

GG- thanks for the reply.

Somethin' cool- I learned my new host, ProTGP has movie hotlinking protection- including WMV's. Works great. :)
