Depends, preferably less than 100 because cat page trades and ads tend to increase the #of outgoing links steadily. A page with 10 site listings can easily have 100+ links, internal links do count....

It's not that hard to discover which domain(s) are checked with automated queries. They do not need more than a handful of queries to figure it out. And it does not help to spread the checking over...
