Welcome JRingo.
Your first step of coming forward at this board may be your most important one yet. Congrats on make the move to speak up :-))
Great question...
If I were to come into adult now, how would I proceed....
I will answer this but UNDERSTAND this is only my opinion, and I am skewed because I been around 10 years in the online industry and see alot of trends and stats....
That was a loaded question because it depends on what your looking to do...make some change to buy a toy part time or generate some bucks and make a full time career...
To make a full time career, you need to be cash resourced coming in....sophistication and resources to pull it off take staffing...
My focus would be on being a site review product. These folks are looking to come to your site to get the advantage and know in respect to where they could best spend their money.
The concept I am drilling down to, is I would get into the genre where the traffic is more targetted and golden...I want to deal with those surfers who want to spend money and not freeload.
The traffic is so much less than the other means, but the conversions are so much more rich....usually under 1:100.
If you review 2000 sites lets say, and a surfer joins one of them, you get paid because you want to be an affiliate of every site your review. Then you can become an affiliate program, and pay webmasters if the surfer signs up to any of the 2000 sites.
Blogs are starting to come into their own...surfers are looking for more information than buttons and banners...because of the glut fo sites...
The content is always provided for free because your content is site reviews, and the sponsors have no problem giving you promo material, trailers, images etc...
It just takes time to do the reviews and it is alot of work.
LOL, just read your question again....if I were starting over today I would be as successful as I was when I came in 10 years ago because I know what is not tapped out..and what is..I also know where technology is going...and I do not want to be edged out because I am antiguated...so choosing my genre has to be immune to the standards ever changing on what it takes to have good paysites in 2005, 2006, 2007...
If I tried to compete for traffic now, non TGP I would be in a world of hurt.
BUT, if I come up with a product that attracts traffic to me, problem is solved. I believe doing a paysite review type of site would be my choice.
If I had unlimited funds, I would of course buy traffic, or ideally buy domains with type-in traffic...
Your going to start seeing sites going up for sale...its already happening...I would sit back in 2005 and acquire them for the traffic...
Hope this answered your question.
